article font size<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tIncrease article font size<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of students rallied at the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/alberta-legislature\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alberta legislature<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/alberta-teachers-association\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alberta Teachers\u2019 Association<\/a> building in Edmonton on Thursday, protesting the province\u2019s decision to order striking teachers back to work.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d21y75miwcfqoq.cloudfront.net\/70c8fc80\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Students streamed into the legislature plaza in front of the sandstone building, carrying signs and wearing red, a colour that has come to symbolize unity with educators.<\/p>\n<p>Social media platforms shared among students are urging walkouts in schools across the province.<\/p>\n<p>Students also rallied in other parts of the city.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" day.<\/p>\n<p>One of those students, Josh Plamondon, said the back-to-work order is terrible and believes educators should be given what they want.<\/p>\n<p>Plamondon, who is in Grade 12, said he is dyslexic and dysgraphic, and while teachers try to help him the best they can, it\u2019s difficult without legislated limits on class sizes.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got classes of 40 students, which is not the way education should be done,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s our obligation as students and as members of Danielle Smith\u2019s government severely curtailed debate rules to pass through the house in just hours a bill ordering 51,000 teachers back to work.<\/p>\n<p>Smith\u2019s government used the Charter\u2019s notwithstanding clause to override teachers\u2019 right to strike and shield the bill from legal challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Smith has said the strike was causing students irreparable harm, while the Alberta Teachers\u2019 Association believes the use of the notwithstanding clause is a gross violation of rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 More to come\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\tMore on Canada<br
