For that reason,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/3-million-years-old-newly-190348764.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:these celestial bodies;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">these celestial bodies<\/a>\u00a0are sometimes also referred to as extrasolar planets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some, called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/nasas-webb-telescope-spots-6-185946033.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:rogue planets;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rogue planets<\/a>, don&#8217;t even orbit a star, but rather are floating through the cosmos untethered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In September, NASA recorded a milestone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/astronomers-found-more-6-000-181119672.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:6,000-plus worlds spotted beyond our solar system;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">6,000-plus worlds spotted beyond our solar system<\/a>, 30 years after the first exoplanet was discovered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As of Oct. 30, a total of 6,028 exoplanets have been confirmed, according to NASA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/nexsci.caltech.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Exoplanet Science Institute;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Exoplanet Science Institute<\/a>, which monitors and tracks exoplanets. What&#8217;s more, not only are nearly 8,000 additional exoplanet candidates awaiting official confirmation, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/history\/more-planets-than-stars-keplers-legacy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:billions are thought to exist;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">billions are thought to exist<\/a>, astronomers say.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers create 1st-ever 3D map of exoplanet<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Now, astronomers have managed to bring an exoplanet into unprecedented focus by using a technique the researchers call 3D eclipse mapping. The effort, also referred to as spectroscopic eclipse mapping, builds on a 2D model that members of the same team\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-023-06230-1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:published in 2023;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">published in 2023<\/a> using observations from the James Webb Space Telescope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Typically, exoplanets are difficult for scientists to observe from Earth because their host stars are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/did-aliens-spy-nuclear-tests-165017228.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:so bright that they outshine them;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">so bright that they outshine them<\/a>. Scientists produced a 3D map of WASP-18 b, marking a first for a planet outside Earth&#8217;s solar system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Discovered in 2009, <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/exoplanet-catalog\/wasp-18-b\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:WASP-18 b;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">WASP-18 b<\/a> is\u00a0a gas giant exoplanet that would be comparable to Jupiter in our solar system \u2013 except it&#8217;s 10 times more massive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Observations from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/james-webb-space-telescope-marks-133022634.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:James Webb Space Telescope;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a>, which launched into the cosmos in 2021, have revealed surface temperatures on the world that reach 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/resource\/wasp-18-b-illustration\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:NASA;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">NASA<\/a>. Water vapor is also present in the planet&#8217;s atmosphere, which the three-dimensional map revealed is constantly broken down by the scorching heat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Its heat, as well as the fact that it orbits its host star in just 23 hours, made it an ideal candidate to attempt the new 3D mapping technique, the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/articles\/does-earth-2-moons-not-114803734.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Like Earth&#039;s moon;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Like Earth&#8217;s moon<\/a>, WASP-18 b has a &#8220;dayside&#8221; that constantly faces the celestial body it orbits. The new 3D map confirmed that the planet has distinct regions differing in both temperature and chemical composition on WASP-18 b&#8217;s star-facing side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For instance, the planet is home to a circular hotspot where the most powerful starlight hits it, and where wind doesn&#8217;t blow strong enough to redistribute the heat. A colder ring surrounds that hotspot near the planet&#8217;s outer edge.<\/p>\n<p>Mapping technique could be used on other exoplanets<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The breakthrough 3D modeling technique is one the researchers hope will soon be used to unveil details of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/nasas-webb-telescope-glimpses-coldest-140003149.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:hundreds of other hot gaseous worlds;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hundreds of other hot gaseous worlds<\/a> beyond Earth&#8217;s solar system \u2013 just as Earth-based telescopes have long already observed Jupiter&#8217;s distinct features.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWith this telescope and this new technique, we can start to understand exoplanets along the same lines as our solar system neighbors,\u201d study lead author <a href=\"https:\/\/astro.cornell.edu\/ryan-challener\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Ryan Challener;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Ryan Challener<\/a>, an astronomer at Cornell University, said in a statement. \u201cWe can start to understand exoplanets in 3D as a population, which is very exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The team&#8217;s research was published Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the journal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41550-025-02666-9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Nature Astronomy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Nature Astronomy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Eric Lagatta is the Space Connect reporter for the USA TODAY Network.
