Barrera\u2019s firing came in November 2023 after she posted on Instagram about the \u201cethnic cleansing\u201d of the Palestinian people in the wake of the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, saying, \u201cGaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp.\u201d Spyglass quickly responded with a statement regarding Barrera\u2019s removal, stating, \u201cWe have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.\u201d<\/p>\n
The \u201cScream\u201d star maintained that\u00a0her comments were not hate speech<\/a>, saying, \u201cFirst and foremost I condemn antisemitism and Islamophobia. I condemn hate and prejudice of any kind against any group of people.\u201d She has since said\u00a0she\u2019s made peace with the incident<\/a>.<\/p>\n This firing created a revolving door at \u201cScream 7,\u201d with departures and arrivals from the film\u2019s cast and crew. Christopher Landon, who once called \u201cScream 7\u201d a \u201cdream job that turned into a nightmare,\u201d exited as director when his script (revolving around Barrera) was no longer usable. Ortega soon followed, reportedly as a result of scheduling conflicts with Netflix\u2019s \u201cWednesday.\u201d Ortega herself clarified this wasn\u2019t the case.<\/p>\n \u201cIt had nothing to do with pay or scheduling,\u201d\u00a0she said in April<\/a>. \u201cThe Melissa stuff was happening and it was all kind of falling apart.\u201d<\/p>\n Since then, a number of people from the OG \u201cScream\u201d team hopped onto the film \u2014\u00a0notably including Neve Campbell<\/a>, who was absent from \u201cScream VI\u201d due to a pay dispute. David Arquette<\/a>,\u00a0Matthew Lillard<\/a>\u00a0and Scott Foley \u2014 all of whom portrayed characters who died in previous films \u2014\u00a0also signed on to return, as did Kevin Williamson (now director), who wrote \u201cScream,\u201d \u201cScream 2\u201d and \u201cScream 4.\u201d<\/p>\n This significant presence of the franchise\u2019s glory days caught a lot of attention on social media in the new trailer, with fans pointing to the repetitive nature of the film\u2019s apparent plotline. Of course, the \u201cScream\u201d franchise is no stranger to a bit of repetition, with many of the films following similar arcs.<\/p>\n It is, however, notable that the \u201cScream\u201d series is one of the most consistently liked franchises in the genre, with many fans calling each entry, at worst, passable and, at best, a horror classic.
