J Clin Periodontol. 2021;48(5):627\u201337.\" href=\"http:\/\/equityhealthj.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12939-025-02660-7#ref-CR16\" id=\"ref-link-section-d295721009e821\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">16<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>In this study, we retrieved the incidence and YLD data for severe periodontitis across all ages, 15 age-specific groups (15\u201319, 20\u201324, 25\u201329, 30\u201334, 35\u201339, 40\u201344, 45\u201349, 50\u201354, 55\u201359, 60\u201364, 65\u201369, 70\u201374, 75\u201379, 80\u201384, 85+), and age-standardized groups in BRICS-Plus countries from 1990 to 2021 for trend analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Case definition and study population<\/p>\n<p>In GBD 2021, disability associated with severe periodontitis was defined as \u201cbad breath, a bad taste in the mouth, and gums that bleed a little from time to time, but which does not interfere with daily activities\u201d, corresponding to ICD-10 codes K05.0\u2013K05.6 and ICD-9 codes 523.0\u2013523.9 [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 12\" title=\"Nascimento GG, Alves-Costa S, Romandini M. Breast cancer epidemiology and sociodemographic differences in BRICS-Plus countries from 1990 to 2019: an age period cohort analysis. ssm - Popul Health. 2023;22.\" href=\"http:\/\/equityhealthj.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12939-025-02660-7#ref-CR3\" id=\"ref-link-section-d295721009e863\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Statistical analysis<\/p>\n<p>In our study, we presented all estimates as counts, age-specific rates and age-standardized rates (ASR) per 100,000 population, and the ASR was calculated using the direct method with age-specific weights from the GBD standard population [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 19\" title=\"Naghavi M, Ong KL, Aali A, Ababneh HS, Abate YH, Abbafati C, et al. The EAPC and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) were computed to assess temporal trends in severe periodontitis burden using a linear regression model. In this model, the natural logarithm of the ASR (Y) was expressed as \u03b1+\u03b2X+\u03b5, where X represented the calendar year and \u03b5 denoted the error term. The EAPC was then calculated as 100\u00d7[exp(\u03b2) \u2212 1] [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 20\" title=\"Zi H, He SH, Leng XY, Xu XF, Huang Q, Weng H, et al. A positive EAPC indicated increasing incidence or YLD rates over the 31-year period, while a negative value implied a decreasing trend. Additionally, the BAPC was employed to project severe periodontitis burden from 2022 to 2040, as this approach has shown superior performance and more reasonable predictions compared to other models [<a data-track=\"click\" data-track-action=\"reference anchor\" data-track-label=\"link\" data-test=\"citation-ref\" aria-label=\"Reference 21\" title=\"Liu Y, Yang X, He Z, Li J, Li Y, Wu Y, et al.
