{"id":252024,"date":"2025-10-31T09:39:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T09:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/252024\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T09:39:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T09:39:13","slug":"nascar-cup-title-contenders-face-added-challenge-with-tire-setup-at-phoenix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/252024\/","title":{"rendered":"NASCAR Cup title contenders face added challenge with tire setup at Phoenix"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AVONDALE, Ariz. \u2014 With limited changes to the car in the Next Gen era, the key focus for the sport to improve the racing has been tires that wear more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe drivers have asked us to take bigger risks, maybe get more uncomfortable with our tire recommendations,\u201d Mark Keto, Goodyear senior project manager for NASCAR, told NBC Sports.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s Cup championship race at Phoenix Raceway will see that trend continue with a new tire combination for this track. It provides an added challenge for title contenders Denny Hamlin, Chase Briscoe, Kyle Larson and William Byron.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"Good news, bad news for NASCAR Cup drivers ahead of Phoenix season finale\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/nascar\/news\/good-news-bad-news-for-nascar-cup-drivers-ahead-of-phoenix-season-finale\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"NASCAR: Cup Series-Practice and Qualifying\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761903551_919_\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chase Briscoe will make his first appearance in the Cup Championship 4 on Sunday at Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>Hamlin said the new tire combination at this 1-mile oval makes Friday\u2019s 50-minute practice session critical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all guessing a little bit on this new tire,\u201d Hamlin said Thursday at Phoenix Raceway. \u201cI don\u2019t believe there\u2019s any one of us four (title contenders) that feels confident we got it (with the tire) going into this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all going to be based off of a ton of assumptions. We have data to kind of pull to get to the answer we came to, but we\u2019re not going to know until Friday. That\u2019s going to be the true kind of test of are we close and can we get it there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"Phoenix championship weekend schedule, TV, weather info for NASCAR Cup, Xfinity and Truck\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/nascar\/news\/phoenix-championship-weekend-schedule-tv-weather-info-for-nascar-cup-xfinity-and-truck-october-november-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"NASCAR: Shriners Children's 500\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761903552_821_\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Champions will be crowned in the top three national series this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The right side tire is similar to the softer option tire used at Phoenix in the spring. The new left side tire is softer than the left sides of the option tire earlier this year. This tire setup was most recently used at New Hampshire in the playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>It has been a steady progression on Goodyear\u2019s behalf to make the tires wear more, putting more control with the driver. Goodyear\u2019s focus used to be to make a tire that would last an entire fuel run. Now, it\u2019s about having a tire that has enough fall-off time lap time that it can be more advantageous to change tires instead of going a full fuel run on the same set.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"Hendrick Motorsports looks to end NASCAR Cup championship drought at Phoenix\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/nascar\/news\/hendrick-motorsports-looks-to-end-nascar-cup-championship-drought-at-phoenix\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"AUTO: NOV 05 NASCAR Cup Series Championship\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761903552_967_\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kyle Larson and William Byron will race for title for Hendrick Motorsports Sunday at Phoenix Raceway.<\/p>\n<p>William Byron, who is in the Championship 4 for a third consecutive season, said the changes have made a positive impact from a driving perspective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve definitely improved the tire and that\u2019s definitely changed the racing,\u201d Byron said. \u201cI think it\u2019s kind of brought it back to classic NASCAR. What I mean by that is typically you\u2019re taking four tires, typically you\u2019re working on your balance and it seems like the guys who can do those things the best, typically, show up at the end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s just made the competition a little bit more authentic, probably, and just kind of made the racing more authentic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"A year after key decision, Joe Gibbs Racing primed for NASCAR Cup championship\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/nascar\/news\/a-year-after-key-decision-joe-gibbs-racing-primed-for-nascar-cup-championship\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image\" alt=\"NASCAR: Cup Qualifying\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761903553_195_\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A winless streak last season led to offseason moves that have pushed Joe Gibbs\u2019 organization forward.<\/p>\n<p>More changes are coming. Short tracks will remain a focus for Goodyear heading into next season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think we\u2019ve found \u2026 some pretty big gains on the left side, so we want to keep moving down that path,\u201d Keto said.<\/p>\n<p>Goodyear plans to have a new left side tire for next year\u2019s Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium, Keto said. Goodyear also plans to run some development tires at an offseason NASCAR test at North Wilkesboro Speedway. That test will be the first for teams with the 750 horsepower package (from 670 horsepower) that will be used next season at ovals measuring less than 1.5 miles and at all road courses.<\/p>\n<p>Keto mentioned that Goodyear plans to test at Iowa Speedway to further development with the left-side tires there.
