{"id":252506,"date":"2025-10-31T14:53:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T14:53:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/252506\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T14:53:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T14:53:12","slug":"swap-planks-for-five-more-functional-core-exercises-as-cherry-picked-by-a-certified-trainer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/252506\/","title":{"rendered":"Swap planks for five more functional core exercises, as cherry picked by a certified trainer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"aec62e8e-5ed6-4fa1-a6ae-00a08e68b4de\">Ever since training for and completing the London marathon two years ago, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/pritchard_jess?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/pritchard_jess?hl=en\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jess Pritchard<\/a> has been left with a nagging feeling that&#8217;s been hard to shift.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat started as a small niggle in my lower back turned into a persistent issue day-to-day,\u201d the certified trainer and group exercise instructor tells Fit&amp;Well.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"aec62e8e-5ed6-4fa1-a6ae-00a08e68b4de-2\">An imbalance between her left glute, lower back and core became exacerbated by training and teaching Spin classes until the only option was to stop.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver time I realized I needed to rebuild the strength and control around my spine, pelvis and core,\u201d she says. And plank exercises wouldn\u2019t cut it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlanks are great for building baseline strength,\u201d she continues. \u201cThey are really spine safe, so a great beginner core exercise that you can make harder with progressions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They are, however, static. As Pritchard points out, your core is called upon during all kinds of movement, like running, lifting, going up the stairs and getting up from sitting. To train the core properly, you need to reflect this multi-functional nature.<\/p>\n<p>Going back to the drawing board, Pritchard devised a five-move core routine she now credits as restoring balance to her core and pelvis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Start your week with achievable workout ideas, health tips and wellbeing advice in your inbox.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of simply isolating muscles in a static pose like a plank, these combinations teach the body to move as one unit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese exercises train dynamic control and teach your body to resist unwanted motion,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey bridge the gap between abs training and real-life movement. That has been key in reducing my pain, and helping me feel strong and able, and confident in moving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-strengthen-your-core-with-this-five-move-routine\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Strengthen your core with this five-move routine<\/p>\n<p id=\"b19ef61d-6cd0-4840-9e5a-0972b328f1a1\">Pritchard admits that these exercises are \u201cfairly intermediate to advanced\u201d but that you can make them more beginner-friendly by using a lighter weight or just your own bodyweight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo slow and aim for precision,\u201d she says. \u201cThe goal is to not rush but to build solid core foundations that actually support you long-term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This five-move core workout can be performed as a standalone workout or the moves can be used for a finisher at the end of your regular session.<\/p>\n<p>Pritchard recommends performing three sets of each exercise, working for 40 seconds, then resting for 20 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSprinkle these across your week and keep repeating them for six weeks,\u201d advises Pritchard.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-1-weighted-deadbug\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>1. Weighted deadbug <\/p>\n<p id=\"8c9658b1-47b6-4573-a396-e2f2e947b58a\">Sets: 3 Time: 40sec Rest: 20sec<\/p>\n<p>Lie on your back and hold a light dumbbell in both hands above your stomach.Lift your legs and bend you knees, so your calves are parallel to the floor.Lift your upper back to engage your abdominal muscles, while pressing your lower back into the floor.Maintaining this position, lower and extend each leg, alternating sides.<\/p>\n<p id=\"58378976-047c-4502-b71c-0d8bc5a01fad\">\u201cDeadbugs help build pelvic and core stability,\u201d says Pritchard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo make this move easier, scrap the dumbbell and perform a bodyweight deadbug. Side plank hip lift<\/p>\n<p id=\"90f6f426-c1ea-4604-ab69-57dbb06afd0a\">Sets: 3 Time: 40sec each side Rest: 20sec<\/p>\n<p>Lie on your right side, with your torso propped up on your forearm, with your elbow directly under your shoulder, and your left foot on top of your right foot.Lift your body to form a straight line from your head to your feet.Keep your other arm by your side or stretched toward the ceiling.Slowly lift and lower your hips.<\/p>\n<p id=\"860217e7-ddc7-4de3-bd4c-2d7a0dc1b080\">\u201cThese target the oblique muscles that run down the side of your abs, helping build lateral core stability,\u201d says Pritchard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMake it easier by simply holding a side plank for the full 40 seconds, rather than pulsing your hips up and down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-3-weighted-sit-up-to-overhead-reach\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>3. Weighted sit-up to overhead reach <\/p>\n<p id=\"2de3ba7e-1d99-43ae-b6cb-25a9e871092c\">Sets: 3 Time: 40sec Rest: 20sec<\/p>\n<p>Sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you.Hold a dumbbell in both hands overhead.Engage your core and slowly lower your torso to the floor, keeping your arms vertical.Use your core to lift your torso back to the starting position.<\/p>\n<p id=\"276dc984-9a49-4e36-9bd4-1b88a61c11ea\">\u201cAdding a weighted overhead element to this sit-up forces your core and shoulders to work together to maintain a strong posture,\u201d says Pritchard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDitch the weight to make it more beginner-friendly, but keep your arms outstretched to learn the technique.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-4-kneeling-wood-chop\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/> 4. Kneeling wood chop <\/p>\n<p id=\"2b8befcf-4a7f-420d-936a-0b5114832bd7\">Sets: 3 Time: 40sec each side Rest: 20sec<\/p>\n<p>Adopt a half-kneeling position with your left knee on the floor and your right foot flat on the floor in front of you, holding a dumbbell in both hands by your left hip.Engaging your core and, keeping your arms straight, lift the dumbbell diagonally up across your body, rotating your torso.Keep your eyes fixed on the dumbbell throughout.Slowly lower the weight to the start.<\/p>\n<p id=\"982ec97b-047e-46ff-bede-d2f527c8c2e6\">\u201cPerforming this move from kneeling increases the demands on all the core muscles, front and back, to stabilize your spine,\u201d says Pritchard.<\/p>\n<p>You can make it easier by replacing the dumbbell with a resistance band, attaching it to a sturdy anchor point and pulling it across your body in the same motion.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5-overhead-march\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>5. Overhead march<\/p>\n<p id=\"654255b0-3ee3-4753-bb77-de28559f9854\">Sets: 3 Time: 40sec Rest: 20sec<\/p>\n<p>Stand holding a light dumbbell overhead in your right hand, with your left arm outstretched to the side to help with balance.March slowly on the spot, bringing one knee to hip height, then the other.After 20 seconds, switch arms.<\/p>\n<p id=\"39408585-8918-4c35-9ae4-36082e612cab\">\u201cI love these for training good posture.
