Or maybe you have been told to wear a continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, machine for sleep apnea, but it is just so cumbersome.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt00083b6nfv8989o6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A new study shows that it is important to take obstructive sleep apnea seriously now \u2013\u2013 it could impact your risk of dementia and Alzheimer\u2019s disease later.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt00093b6ny2jfgi3i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea is associated with a greater risk for new microbleeds in the brain, according to the study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt000a3b6n4i62pfag@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cCerebral microbleeds are a common finding in the aging brain,\u201d said Dr. Jonathan Graff-Radford, professor of neurology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. He was not involved in the research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt000b3b6na3h7u7ye@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Microbleeds increase with age, and people who have them have a slightly higher risk of future strokes and faster cognitive decline, Graff-Radford said. \u201cAnything that increases microbleeds is relevant to brain aging,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt000c3b6n3cbd3k5k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition in which a blockage of airways by weak, heavy or relaxed soft tissues disrupts breathing during sleep. The condition is different from central sleep apnea, in which the brain occasionally skips telling the body to breathe.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt000d3b6nq9cpmjuw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/sleep-apnea\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20377636\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">few ways to treat<\/a> obstructive sleep apnea, including relying on oral devices that keep the throat open during sleep, regularly using a CPAP or similar machine, and having surgeries.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt000e3b6n9bdsz7ou@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study has a strong methodology and should stress the importance of screening for sleep apnea to clinicians and treatment to patients, said Dr. Rudy Tanzi, professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was not involved in the research.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt000f3b6n36xvckwm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDon\u2019t ignore it. Do something about it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just the immediate risk for down the road for bleeds, but also later down the road for Alzheimer\u2019s disease as well.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt000g3b6njp28zsba@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Not addressing obstructive sleep apnea is a double whammy, Tanzi said. Not getting enough good-quality sleep \u2013\u2013 which can be hard to do when your breathing is impaired during the night \u2013\u2013 has been associated with brain aging, but the microbleeds that could result may increase the risk for dementia down the line.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt000h3b6ni2l13ef0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study, which was published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2840617?utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_term=102825\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">JAMA Network Open<\/a> Tuesday, is observational, which means that it can only establish that obstructive sleep apnea and microbleeds are associated, not that one definitively causes the other. Further studies will need to examine if treating sleep apnea can prevent microbleeds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt000i3b6npivtsxwd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When is it time to ask your doctor about obstructive sleep apnea?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt000j3b6ngiq9tqhg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Loud, frequent snoring is a good indicator, Tanzi said. If your partner notices pauses in your breathing while you sleep or gasping and choking, that\u2019s another sign you should look into sleep apnea.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt000k3b6nfkdupeza@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Problems during the day can be a good indicator, too. Sleepiness, trouble concentrating, irritability and increased hunger are signs you may not be getting quality sleep and that it may be time to get assessed for sleep apnea.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt000l3b6na9i1gjvg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Night sweats might also be a sign of sleep apnea, as research has shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/3\/5\/e002795\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">about 30% of people<\/a> with obstructive sleep apnea have reported night sweats.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt000m3b6nffaen3kt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/14510-nocturia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Waking up at least two times<\/a> in the night, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/27\/health\/weird-sleep-apnea-signs-wellness\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">teeth grinding<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/1105630\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">morning headaches<\/a> might also indicate a problem.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhapkzvt000n3b6nph3c83wy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The latest study \u201curges (people) to take it more seriously, because the damage that can come from obstructive sleep apnea can definitely be more severe than you think,\u201d Tanzi said.\n    <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/editor-note\/instances\/cmhaq1u9g00163b6nr575lson@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"editor-note\" class=\"editor-note-elevate vossi-editor-note_elevate inline-placeholder \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    Get inspired by a weekly roundup on living well, made simple.
