In 2022, Nupur decided to walk away from the entertainment industry. As reported by The Times of India, she embraced sanyas (renunciation) and took the name Peetambra Maa. Her decision came after a period of immense personal turmoil; she lost her mother and sister, and around the same time, her financial situation collapsed due to the PMC Bank scam.

In 2019, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) dissolved the board of PMC Bank and imposed strict regulatory restrictions — including limits on customer withdrawals — after uncovering major financial irregularities. In an interview, Nupur revealed that these back-to-back challenges made her rethink her purpose in life. “After my savings got stuck in the bank. My mother’s and my sister’s deaths were the last straw. I had started disconnecting from the world before that. I was not interested in living this worldly life, so all those who were connected with me, I took their permission. They unwillingly agreed, and then I took to the spiritual path.”

After leaving Mumbai, Nupur began travelling across India. For nearly three years, she lived in caves, forests, and remote ashrams, often in extreme weather. She shared that she survived frostbite, rat bites, and illness in freezing temperatures but found peace in spiritual practice. “I wanted to experience life without comfort,” she once said. “Living close to nature brought me clarity.”

A life of simplicity and faith

Nupur now lives with only a few clothes and minimal possessions. She spends around Rs 10,000–Rs 12,000 a month and occasionally practices bhikshatan, asking for alms, which she says helps dissolve ego and teaches humility. “Life became simpler after I let go,” she said. “There are no bills or pressures now, only peace.”

As Peetambra Maa, she encourages people to live a simple and humble life, focusing on faith and inner peace instead of wealth or fame. Even after going through many struggles, Nupur drew her strength from her faith.
