Steve goes, \u2018I&#8217;ll call Keith,\u2019 and my ears pricked up! So, he calls Keith, and Keith replies, \u2018Sure, come around here!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such is the ease with which Steve \u201cBoltz\u201d Bolton has made his way through rock and roll\u2019s landscape. Often at the right place at the right time, the guitarist \u2014 who has performed since 2016 with a revised lineup of Atomic Rooster \u2014 has played with everyone from Pete Townshend (on the Who\u2019s 1989 reunion tour<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/guitarists\/pete-townshend-substitute-guitarist-steve-bolton-on-the-who-1989-tour\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/guitarists\/pete-townshend-substitute-guitarist-steve-bolton-on-the-who-1989-tour\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">)<\/a> to Paul Young (as a fully paid member of the \u201cEvery Time You Go Away\u201d singer\u2019s band).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"bb03b3a6-cb1a-43ab-974c-5755b2517b15-2\">He\u2019s previously regaled us with his tales of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/guitarists\/pete-townshend-substitute-guitarist-steve-bolton-on-the-who-1989-tour\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/guitarists\/pete-townshend-substitute-guitarist-steve-bolton-on-the-who-1989-tour\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Townshend\u2019s guitar-smashing exploits<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/guitarists\/bob-dylan-s-hearts-of-fire-killed-richard-marquand\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/guitarists\/bob-dylan-s-hearts-of-fire-killed-richard-marquand\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Dylan\u2019s odd behavior <\/a>on the set of his 1989 film, Hearts of Fire. Here he adds three more stories of his adventures with Ray Davies, David Bowie and Keith Richards.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-e3027ac4-6a78-47eb-8afd-5f73f08a3131\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Dave Davies and she who shall not be named<\/p>\n<p id=\"3be1369e-570e-45db-8a6c-35e661b2218b\">When the Kinks\u2019 Ray Davies sought his guitar-playing services for his 2006 solo album, Other People&#8217;s Lives, Bolton says friends cautioned him that Davies could be difficult. \u201cThey warned me to be careful with Ray as he was a really weird guy and didn\u2019t suffer fools lightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I went up to his Konk Studios in North London to meet him, and he could not have been any nicer. Once he discovered I was a vegetarian too, like him, he would meet me at the studio with biscuits. And one of them is Chrissie Hynde from The Pretenders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>From 1980 to 1984, Hynde and Davies were in a volatile relationship that produced a daughter. They subsequently broke up and were still feuding more than 20 years later when Bolton was working with him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">All the latest guitar news, interviews, lessons, reviews, deals and more, direct to your inbox!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it was an unwritten law to not mention her name,\u201d Bolton continues.<\/p>\n<p>Which made it inevitable that he would say something he shouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in a control room one day with a lead from my <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-electric-guitars\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-electric-guitars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">electric guitar<\/a> going out into my amp in the studio and I\u2019m doing an overdub for this track. I\u2019ve got a really cool guitar part happening, and as I get around the chord progression, I do a couple of runs at it. One\u2019s a kind of a more regular rolling arpeggio thing, while the other is a bit more way out there, where I\u2019m taking more liberties with it.<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLater, we\u2019re listening back to both overdubs and the producer, Laurie Latham, says to me, \u2018Steve, I prefer the first one, the more regular approach.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Ray looks at me and goes, \u2018Yeah, Steve, I prefer the more regular approach too. I agree with Laurie.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I go, \u2018Well actually, I prefer the more laissez-faire version because the more regular approach sounds a bit too much like\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then, suddenly, a voice in my head goes, \u2018Go on! Say it, say it!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI go, \u2018It sounds a bit too much like The Pretenders!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the whole room goes eerily quiet. I look at Ray and say, \u2018No offense.\u2019 And Ray goes, \u2018No offense taken. (Image credit: Alamy)<\/p>\n<p id=\"29f1771d-628c-49a2-8670-d7e5d13eed33\">Bolton believes that the rapport he developed with Davies proved pivotal to changing Davies\u2019s approach to his guitar sounds on the recording.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would go up there most days during the week to do guitar overdubs. Ray would put a bit of guitar on as well, but his guitar parts would be all sort of like flanging and chorus-y, and very \u201980s sounding. I said to him one day, \u2018Hey, no offense, but go get that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-telecasters\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-telecasters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Telecaster<\/a> out, and give the parts some guts like you do on \u201cAll Day and All of the Night,\u201d where you do that counter-rhythm thing.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he turned to me and said, \u2018Really?\u2019 And I answered, \u2018Absolutely! That\u2019s what people love about the Kinks \u2014 that old sound.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was trying to follow the \u201980s fashion at that point, but I fired him up after that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-4822642b-42ed-4a47-9208-45966401f362\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>David Bowie concurs<\/p>\n<p id=\"ca5fd7c4-21eb-4f2a-9ac5-96c139a232b3\">\u201cOne day, I got a call from producer Tony Visconti who said, \u2018I&#8217;ve got a session for you tomorrow,\u2019\u201d Bolton recalls. \u201c\u2018It&#8217;s with somebody really famous and you can probably guess who it is. So, can you be at my studio, Good Earth Studios in London\u2019s Soho tomorrow?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I get there the next day, of course, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/guitarists\/david-bowie-heart-attack\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/guitarists\/david-bowie-heart-attack\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Bowie<\/a> was there. The recording sessions were for the television program The Kenny Everett Video Show. David had to remake a number of tracks because the union required that artists re-record their material for broadcast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo here I am, in the recording booth playing <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-acoustic-guitars\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/gear\/best-acoustic-guitars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acoustic guitar<\/a> together with David on \u2018Space Oddity,\u2019 and I go, \u2018Oh my god, David Bowie!\u2019 And he looks at me and replies, \u2018That\u2019s right.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then we both just carried on strumming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-dff35898-189a-4458-9096-3e7ad3c8bec3\" href=\"\" data-url=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Keith Richards vs. Dr. John<\/p>\n<p id=\"b007ae40-3e4d-4faa-8596-86b5738ccf63\">In 2001, Bolton would be called upon to join Richards onstage for a handful of Save the Rainforest concerts for the Rainforest Alliance. After performing a show with guest artists in Santa Monica, the musicians gathered to rehearse for the pair of shows coming up at New York City\u2019s Beacon Theater. Among them were the Memphis Horns, Dr. John, Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown, and Clarence \u201cGatemouth\u201d Brown. Steve Jordan was serving as music director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re rehearsing this Dr. John song, \u2018Right Place, Wrong Time,\u2019 for the planned finale and Steve\u2019s trying to juggle all these egos in the room,\u201d Bolton recalls. \u201cSteve says, \u2018Let&#8217;s sort this out by having different solos.\u2019 He points to Kim Simmonds first, and says, \u2018You do the first solo on harmonica, and then, Boltz, you do a solo.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Dr. John goes, \u2018Yes, Boltz, you do a solo.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen he points at Keith across the crowded room and starts giving him daggers and this voodoo vibe. He points at him and says, \u2018As for you, motherfucker, you can kiss my goddamn ass.\u2019 And the whole room goes really quiet. (Image credit: KMazur\/WireImage)<\/p>\n<p id=\"463b2f09-beb6-4e97-971a-c380c20dc2d5\">\u201cAfterwards I said to Steve, \u2018What was all that about?\u2019 He says, \u2018Well, there\u2019s really bad blood between The Rolling Stones and Dr. John and Ry Cooder. Because not only did Ry Cooder play a lot on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/andy-johns-rolling-stones-exile-on-main-st\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/andy-johns-rolling-stones-exile-on-main-st\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Exile on Main St.<\/a>, but he and Dr. John instigated a lot of the songs and never got a credit for it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Mick Jagger confirmed to The Face that Dr. John had offered him a tape full of songs at the price of $50 a tune. Jagger turned him down, but apparently the Dr. was convinced his tunes were appropriated for Exile.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, Bolton says, Gatemouth Brown helped lighten the vibe.
