In some years, the stock market is more volatile than usual, and 2025 is shaping up to be one of those years.<\/p>\n
In April, both the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 cratered, falling roughly 20% from their February market highs, as investors dumped stocks in reaction to the Trump administration\u2019s tariff policy<\/a>. Markets did sharply rebound in the ensuing months as the so-called \u201cTACO\u201d trade \u2014 a tongue-in-cheek market acronym for \u201cTrump always chickens out\u201d \u2014 unfolded. But it won\u2019t be long before tariffs directly affect the actual earnings of various companies. If investors are right, stocks that have been already hit may face additional selling pressure as weak earnings reports come trickling out.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s a look at some popular brand stocks that have already suffered from the threat of tariffs and that may remain depressed as earnings reflect the reality of their impact<\/a>.<\/p>\n Stock price as of July 16, 2025: $11.82<\/p>\n Year-to-date (YTD) return: -44.28%<\/p>\n VF Corporation may not be a household name to most Americans, but its most popular brands \u2014 including The North Face, Vans and Timberland \u2014 certainly are. The manufacturer of footwear and clothing sources much of its material and labor from Vietnam and China, two countries that have been directly targeted by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n Although the tariff policy regarding China and Vietnam has been changed repeatedly over the past few months, it\u2019s highly likely that any final policy will directly impair companies like VF Corporation, who can\u2019t simply start up operations in a tariff-free country overnight. Shares have been hammered thus far in 2025 and seem likely to remain under pressure until the company finds a way to minimize damage from tariffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n Investing Advice: How To Turn $100K Into a Million: Your Step-by-Step Guide<\/a><\/p>\n Retailer Best Buy is a bit of a different case than VF Corporation, showing how tariffs can affect companies\u2019 earnings in different ways. Although Best Buy does manufacture some of its private-label products in China, its biggest tariff impact is in the disruption to its supply chain. The company\u2019s primary business is retailing goods manufactured by other companies, and many of those in its supply chain are exposed to tariffs, including in China and Mexico.<\/p>\n Story Continues <\/p>\n Although Best Buy could theoretically pass on these costs to its customers, that\u2019s not always feasible in a competitive retail world, meaning the company may face shrinking margins and profitability.<\/p>\n Nike is an interesting case, as investors in the stock<\/a> have been whipsawed all year. Shares took a tumble in April on the back of the tariff announcements, as the company has a large exposure to Asian manufacturing. But at the end of June, shares spiked higher as the company reported better-than-expected earnings and a plan to mitigate the effect of tariffs.<\/p>\n The stock is still down for the year, versus a YTD gain of almost 7% for the S&P 500 index, but it is finding its footing. With investor optimism growing, however, any tariff-related earnings shortfall in the months ahead could devastate the stock. The company itself projects a $1 billion effect from tariffs.<\/p>\n Although Target has aggressively shifted its imports away from China, dropping from more than 60% to its current level of about 30%, it still has significant risk in the region. Unlike some other companies on this list, however, Target has its own host of operational problems to deal with that aren\u2019t even related to tariffs.<\/p>\n Decreased foot traffic, increased markdowns, rising costs and falling earnings have pushed Target behind its major competitors like Walmart<\/a>, Costco and Dollar General. Even if Target can successfully navigate the tariff situation, it still has a lot of foundational business issues to conquer.
