{"id":256815,"date":"2025-11-02T14:04:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-02T14:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/256815\/"},"modified":"2025-11-02T14:04:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-02T14:04:10","slug":"blue-jays-world-series-run-propels-rogers-sports-empire-higher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/256815\/","title":{"rendered":"Blue Jays&#8217; World Series Run Propels Rogers Sports Empire Higher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/toronto-blue-jays\/\" id=\"auto-tag_toronto-blue-jays_1\" data-tag=\"toronto-blue-jays\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto Blue Jays<\/a> fell just short of their first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/world-series\/\" id=\"auto-tag_world-series_1\" data-tag=\"world-series\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World Series<\/a> title since 1993, losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 in an 11-inning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/leagues\/baseball\/2025\/los-angeles-dodgers-win-world-series-yoshinobu-yamamoto-1234875635\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/leagues\/baseball\/2025\/los-angeles-dodgers-win-world-series-yoshinobu-yamamoto-1234875635\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Game 7<\/a> on Saturday night. They were two outs away when Dodgers\u2019 Miguel Rojas tied the game with a homer in the top of the ninth; Will Smith put Los Angeles ahead for good with a homer in the 11th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tStill, this was a magical season for the Blue Jays, who made their run to the World Series after finishing in the bottom of the AL East in 2024. And the timing was perfect for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/rogers-communications\/\" id=\"auto-tag_rogers-communications_1\" data-tag=\"rogers-communications\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rogers Communications<\/a>, which owns the team, as it doubles down on sports as a business pillar for the telecom giant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe are in the early stages of transforming our sports and entertainment business into one of the best sports businesses globally,\u201d Rogers president and CEO Tony Staffieri said during the company\u2019s recent third-quarter earnings call. \u201cThis is our third pillar of growth beyond wireless and cable and will be meaningful to Rogers over time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWireless and cable still represent roughly 85% of Rogers\u2019 revenue, but the media and sports segment has been growing faster, as the company looks to unlock some of that value for shareholders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRogers bought 80% of the Blue Jays at a $140 million valuation in 2000, and it bought the other 20% four years later. It expanded its sports portfolio in 2012 when Rogers and BCE teamed up to purchase a combined 75% of Maple Leaf Sports &amp; Entertainment (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/mlse\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mlse_1\" data-tag=\"mlse\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MLSE<\/a>) from the Ontario Teachers\u2019 Pension Plan in a deal that valued MLSE at roughly $1.7 billion, including debt. MLSE owns the NBA\u2019s Toronto Raptors, NHL\u2019s Toronto Maple Leafs and MLS\u2019 Toronto FC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn July, Rogers <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/business\/team-sales\/2025\/rogers-mlse-sports-teams-value-1234858947\/\">closed its purchase<\/a>\u00a0of BCE\u2019s 37.5% stake in MLSE for CA$4.7 billion ($3.45 billion based on then exchange rates), which pushed its MLSE stake to 75%. Rogers also owns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/canada\/\" id=\"auto-tag_canada_1\" data-tag=\"canada\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canada<\/a>\u2019s biggest sports media brand, Sportsnet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ve held significant [sports] assets with the original 37.5% in MLSE, the Jays, Sportsnet and other media assets, and we get zero credit for that today in our share valuation,\u201d Staffieri said in a July interview. \u201cThe thesis is to consolidate all those assets together and surface that value for Rogers\u2019 shareholders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe four teams are worth a combined $12.6 billion, according to Sportico\u2019s most recent team valuations, led by the Raptors at $5.22 billion (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/feature\/nba-team-values-ranking-list-1234697991\/\">No. 12 in the NBA<\/a>) and Maple Leafs at $4.25 billion (first among <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/feature\/nhl-team-values-ranking-list-1234693065\/\">NHL teams<\/a>). The Jays rank No. 13 at <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/feature\/mlb-team-values-rankings-list-1234715821\/\">$2.39 billion<\/a>, and Toronto FC is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/feature\/mls-soccer-team-value-ranking-1234689586\/\">$725 million<\/a>, 10th in MLS. Rogers\u2019 current share of those teams is $10 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThere are a number of alternatives available to us,\u201d Staffieri said. \u201cWhether it\u2019s private investors, some type of IPO or some type of spin-out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-sportico-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/MerQA-rogers-sports-franchises.png\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"745\" width=\"1024\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tKilmer Sports Ventures, which is controlled and majority-owned by Larry Tanenbaum, owns the remaining 25% of MLSE. Rogers has an option to buy that stake in 2026, and Staffieri and Rogers executive chairman Edward Rogers both told Sportico they expect to exercise the option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cSports has emerged as a central theme for RCI in recent months, as investors look to future monetization events,\u201d J\u00e9rome Dubreuil, a Desjardins equity analyst, wrote in a research note last month. He said it was reassuring that management confirmed that credit agencies are aware of the \u201cMLSE consolidation plan\u201d and that no equity financing should be required to bridge the gap between the buyout of Kilmer and the sale of an MLSE minority stake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRogers has started flexing its financial muscles with the Blue Jays to compete with the big-spending Yankees and Red Sox in their division. Toronto is baseball\u2019s sixth-biggest metro area and is in a unique position as the only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportico.com\/t\/mlb\/\" id=\"auto-tag_mlb_1\" data-tag=\"mlb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MLB<\/a> team in a country of 41 million. The team\u2019s opening day payroll slipped to No. 21 for the 2019 season, but the Jays shot up the rankings to fifth this year at $242 million, more than double the 2019 season. That does not include the 14-year, $500 million contract the club gave Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in April, which starts next year. The extension paid $20 million of Guerrero\u2019s $325 million signing bonus this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRogers privately financed a $300 million renovation of Rogers Centre over nearly two years that transformed the building from its multipurpose sports roots to baseball focused. It added premium inventory with club areas and five outfield districts that also came with new sponsorship opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tConcerts have also become an increased priority\u00a0at the venue. Last year, Rogers hosted six Taylor Swift shows, and its 2025 calendar included Billy Joel, Metallica, Morgan Wallen, Post Malone and The Weeknd.
