Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/a> says he apologized to United States President Donald Trump<\/a> after an Ontario anti-tariff ad<\/a> aired in the U.S. last week.<\/p>\n

Carney made the comments Saturday from South Korea at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit<\/a> when asked by reporters whether an apology was made.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did apologize to the president. The president was offended by the ad, and it\u2019s not something I would have done, which is to put in place that advertisement, and so I apologized to him,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m the one who is responsible, in my role as prime minister for the relationship with the President of the United States, and the federal government is responsible for the foreign relationship with the U.S. government. So, things happen. We take the good with the bad, and I apologized to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

This comes after Trump told reporters Friday aboard Air Force One that Carney \u201capologized\u201d to him<\/a> for the ad when the two leaders met in Asia earlier in the week.<\/p>\n

He added \u201cI have a very good relationship. I like him (Carney) a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Carney was asked Saturday if he initially told Ontario Premier Doug Ford not to go forward with the ad he said \u201cyes,\u201d and added:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou saw what came of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ford\u00a0defended the commercial<\/a> amid Trump\u2019s backlash saying it \u201cachieved\u201d its goal. He also claimed the ad was cleared with Carney prior to going to air.<\/p>\n

After speaking with Carney, Ford agreed to pull the ad after it would air at least twice during coverage of the World Series Championship<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump called the ad \u201cfake\u201d and \u201cegregious\u201d and, after seeing it, said he was pausing trade talks with Carney \u201cfor a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to meet with him (Carney). No, I\u2019m not going to be meeting with them (Canada) for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response to the ad airing in the U.S., Trump also said he would add another 10 per cent tariff<\/a> on top of additional levies.<\/p>\n

Trump did not provide specific details when asked when those additional tariffs will kick in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know when it\u2019s going to kick in,\u201d he told reporters on board Air Force One on Oct. 27. \u201cWe\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ad in question included several clips from a 1987 radio address by former U.S. president Ronald Reagan speaking about \u201cfree and fair trade,\u201d including how he views the risks of tariffs and some protectionist government policies at the time.<\/p>\n

Trump argued the ad took Reagan out of context, saying the former president \u201cloved tariffs\u201d and that the ad \u201ctried to make it look the other way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some premiers, including Manitoba\u2019s Wab Kinew, came to Ford\u2019s defence<\/a> after Trump\u2019s initial response, saying \u201cthese ads are working.\u201d<\/p>\n

British Columbia Premier David Eby said the province will roll out its own ad campaign<\/a> in the U.S. \u201cto explain who wins and who loses\u201d in reference to Trump\u2019s tariffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n
