Another distraction was Saturday night\u2019s Major League Baseball championships, which saw the Los Angeles Dodgers <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/world-series-los-angeles-dodgers-beat-toronto-blue-jays-1236567727\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">score a victory<\/a> over the Toronto Blue Jays in a nail-biting Game 7. As a result, revenues between Friday and Sunday amounted to just $43 million, marking the worst weekend of the entire year, according to Comscore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe cavalry cannot get here soon enough,\u201d says Comscore\u2019s head of marketplace trends, Paul Dergarabedian. \u201cThe industry is in dire need of a boost [after] this scary-slow World Series-impacted, Halloween-festivity-laden weekend. It\u2019s emblematic of what has been a quiet post-summer moviegoing corridor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnother scary stat: This closes out the lowest-grossing October in 27 years with domestic earnings stalling at an abysmal $425 million, the poorest haul since October 1997 with $385 million, not adjusted for inflation. This ignominious record doesn\u2019t include 2020, when theaters hadn\u2019t rebounded from the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAlthough Halloween is traditionally a moribund period at the box office, October is usually the time when studios start to launch their awards hopefuls. Instead of providing a box office jolt, though, Oscar contenders and big-budget tentpoles alike, such as Dwayne Johnson\u2019s \u201cThe Smashing Machine,\u201d Luca Guadagnino\u2019s \u201cAfter the Hunt,\u201d Disney\u2019s \u201cTron: Ares\u201d and \u201cSpringsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere\u201d struggled to show signs of life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn a surprise win, the Colleen Hoover adaptation \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/regretting-you\/\" id=\"auto-tag_regretting-you\" data-tag=\"regretting-you\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Regretting You<\/a>\u201d rose to No. 1 with $8.1 million from 3,424 theaters in its sophomore outing. However, Universal\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/black-phone-2\/\" id=\"auto-tag_black-phone-2\" data-tag=\"black-phone-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Black Phone 2<\/a>\u201d was ever-so-slightly behind with $8 million from 3,305 venues \u2014 so the final order could shift when final numbers are confirmed on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cRegretting You\u201d declined just 41% from its debut, bringing ticket sales to $27.5 million in North America and $50 million globally against a $30 million budget. Hoover is the author of last year\u2019s sleeper hit \u201cIt Ends With Us.\u201d Two of her other novels, \u201cVerity\u201d and \u201cReminders of Him,\u201d are being adapted by other studios for theatrical release in 2026. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cBlack Phone 2\u201d has grossed $61 million domestically and $104 million globally to date. The scary sequel is this year\u2019s only Blumhouse release to get anywhere near the $100 million mark, though \u201cFive Nights at Freddy\u2019s 2\u201d in December will attempt to continue the good fortunes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn another potential photo finish, Netflix\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/kpop-demon-hunters\/\" id=\"auto-tag_kpop-demon-hunters\" data-tag=\"kpop-demon-hunters\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">KPop Demon Hunters<\/a>\u201d re-release likely tied for No. 3 with Sony and Crunchyroll\u2019s  \u201cChainsaw Man\u00a0\u2013 The Movie: Reze Arc,\u201d with both films estimating a $6 million weekend haul. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNetflix isn\u2019t reporting grosses for \u201cKPop Demon Hunters,\u201d which played 2,890 theaters over the weekend, so projections hail from rival studios and exhibitors. This is the second big-screen stint for the animated musical, which first screened theatrically in August (after becoming Netflix\u2019s most popular film ever) and <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/box-office\/box-office-kpop-demon-hunters-leads-box-office-over-weapons-1236497070\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/box-office\/box-office-kpop-demon-hunters-leads-box-office-over-weapons-1236497070\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">led in North America with roughly $18 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cChainsaw Man\u00a0\u2013 The Movie: Reze Arc,\u201d which topped the box office last weekend, has grossed $30 million in North America to date. Like many anime films, \u201cChainsaw Man\u201d has been much bigger at the international box office, with earnings at $109 million overseas and $139 million globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn fifth place, \u201cBugonia,\u201d the latest collaboration between director Yorgos Lanthimos and star Emma Stone, successfully expanded nationwide with $4.8 million from 2,043 theaters. The film, in which Stone portrays a high-powered tech CEO who is kidnapped by two conspiracy theorists who\u00a0believe she is an extraterrestrial being sent to destroy Earth, earned a \u201cB\u201d grade on CinemaScore exit polls. However, that kind of middling reception isn\u2019t unusual for a polarizing film, as Lanthimos is wont to make. Ticket buyers were mostly younger males, with men accounting for 61% of audiences and 24 to 34-year-olds representing 39% of crowds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tElsewhere, \u201cBack to the Future\u201d returned to theaters in honor of the film\u2019s 40th anniversary and collected a respectable $4.7 million from 2,105 theaters over the weekend. \u201cThe Twilight Saga\u201d also made its way back to the big screen to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the publishing of author Stephanie Meyer\u2019s first novel. Theaters are playing one of the five \u201cTwilight\u201d films each night between Oct. 29 and Nov. 2, which have collectively accounted for roughly $3 million from 1,500 locations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNext weekend sees the debut of Disney\u2019s \u201cPredator: Badlands,\u201d followed by heist threequel \u201cNow You See Me: Now You Don\u2019t\u201d and Edgar Wright and Glen Powell\u2019s \u201cThe Running Man\u201d remake. But business might not pick up in earnest until the Thanksgiving corridor when Disney\u2019s \u201cZootopia 2\u201d and Universal\u2019s \u201cWicked: For Good\u201d float to theaters. Then James Cameron\u2019s \u201cAvatar: Fire and Ash\u201d on Dec. 19 is expected to end the year with a bang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cEarly November releases will be most welcome,\u201d says Dergarabedian. \u201cBut mid-November through New Year\u2019s Eve will be vitally important [for] the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Halloween was light on the box office treats.
