{"id":258417,"date":"2025-11-03T08:18:16","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T08:18:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/258417\/"},"modified":"2025-11-03T08:18:16","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T08:18:16","slug":"alberta-hunter-recalls-own-grizzly-bear-close-call-urges-hunting-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/258417\/","title":{"rendered":"Alberta hunter recalls own grizzly bear close call, urges hunting safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A hunter in Alberta is sharing his story of a close call with a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/grizzly-bear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">grizzly bear<\/a> several years ago that happened in the same spot as a man who was rushed to hospital early this week.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761814748_447_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt did bring back memories of my being charged by a grizzly bear in that exact same location six years ago,\u201d said Paul Wagman, a hunter and retired police officer.<\/p>\n<p>Wagman told Global News he retired from being a police officer due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but said in an interview that seeing the latest story about a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11503553\/grizzly-bear-attack-cochrane-man-in-hospital\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">bear attack<\/a> brought back another source of PTSD from his past.<\/p>\n<p>Wagman said he had harvested a sheep when his own near-attack happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bear came to the gunshot, followed us and the scent of the harvested animal all the way down and came at us to threaten and intimidate us to take that harvest away,\u201d he told Global News.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>He said he\u2019s grown concerned grizzly bears may not fear humans as they once did, pointing to the incident this past week.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Alberta fish and wildlife officers confirmed two men were hunting south of the town of Cochrane, Alta., west of Calgary, when one of them was attacked by a grizzly.<\/p>\n<p>The bear was shot by the victim\u2019s hunting partner and is believed to have been killed.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/1761854947_61_national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for STARS Air Ambulance confirmed to Global News that the man, in his 30s, was transported to Foothills Hospital in Calgary, though they could not provide details of the victim\u2019s condition.<\/p>\n<p>That wasn\u2019t the only grizzly attack in October.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, a couple from Prince George, B.C., were hiking in the McGregor Mountains when they <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11477087\/mcgregor-mountain-hiking-trails\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">came face-to-face with a grizzly bear and her cubs.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Stay \u2018bear aware,\u2019 experts urge as Carstairs man recovers from grizzly attack'\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/grizzz.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"   data-\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:52<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStay \u2018bear aware,\u2019 experts urge as Carstairs man recovers from grizzly attack\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>According to Shauna Terai, there was a \u201cscuffle\u201d and at one point the grizzly bear picked her up before dropping her, giving her time to hit the SOS button on her satellite communication device. Her husband Chris then jumped into action to distract the bear.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>Another man from B.C. <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11496140\/bc-man-dies-fighting-off-grizzly-bear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">who fought off a grizzly bear<\/a> in the East Kootenays on Oct. 2, died from his injuries more than three weeks later.
