It’s not the hardware the Toronto Blue Jays<\/a> were after, but it’s recognition that was earned all the same.<\/p>\n

First baseman Ty France was among the 20 Gold Glove winners for the 2025 MLB season, the league announced on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

First established in 1957, the Gold Glove award recognizes the best defensive player at each position in the league. <\/p>\n

France, after joining the Blue Jays at the trade deadline, earns his first career Gold Glove award and becomes the second first baseman to take home the honour, joining Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (2022).<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old led all players at first base with plus-10 outs-above-average<\/a> in 2025, per Baseball Savant, helping Toronto establish itself as one of the best defensive ball clubs in MLB, en route to the franchise’s first American League pennant and World Series appearance since 1993.<\/p>\n

To determine the winners at the nine standard positions, all 30 managers and up to six coaches from each team voted from a pool of players in their respective leagues, excluding players from their own team. Those votes make up 75 per cent of the selection total, while the SABR defensive index counts for the other 2025 per cent.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, for the utility position, a specialized defensive formula is used in collaboration with SABR \u2014 different from the traditional selection process.<\/p>\n

The Chicago Cubs had an MLB-best six finalists this season, but the Blue Jays weren’t far behind as they totalled six nominations between five players: Alejandro Kirk (C), France (1B), Guerrero Jr. (1B), Andr\u00e9s Gim\u00e9nez (2B) and Ernie Clement (3B, U).<\/p>\n
