We said yesterday that we didn\u2019t want to lose another humpback in Eyjafj\u00f6r\u00f0ur this year, so we really hope this ends well,\u201d said Freyr Antonsson, owner of Arctic Sea Tours in Dalv\u00edk.\n<\/p>\n<p> Unclear how the whale became trapped<\/p>\n<p>\n The crew of M\u00e1ni, the company\u2019s whale-watching boat, first spotted the animal around 10 a.m. yesterday, struggling to stay afloat to breathe. It was clearly stuck by the tail.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n The captain of M\u00e1ni reported the incident to the Icelandic Coast Guard at 10:20 a.m., and about an hour later, the Dalv\u00edk search and rescue boat V\u00f6r\u00f0ur arrived at the scene.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n Captains from Arctic Sea Tours then went out aboard the company\u2019s other vessel, D\u00f6gun, along with diver Erlendur Bogason, carrying equipment to cut the whale loose and an underwater drone. That was the last update Morgunbla\u00f0i\u00f0 received before they had to abandon the effort due to rough seas and bad weather.\n<\/p>\n<p> No sign of fishing gear<\/p>\n<p>\n Antonsson says it remains unclear what the whale is entangled in, though it\u2019s evident the tail is trapped.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n \u201cWe couldn\u2019t see anything above the surface indicating what\u2019s holding it. There were no signs of fishing gear, so at this point we simply don\u2019t know what the humpback has caught itself in,\u201d he said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n The whale appears able to breathe without too much difficulty, though the strain is audible in its blows, he added.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n Rescuers plan to head back out at first light this morning, around 8:30 a.m., to continue efforts to free the animal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The whale-watching boat M\u00e1ni reached the distressed humpback whale shortly before 10 a.m. yesterday.
