{"id":259367,"date":"2025-11-03T18:50:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T18:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/259367\/"},"modified":"2025-11-03T18:50:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T18:50:12","slug":"nape-president-sounds-alarm-over-ai-monitoring-of-patients-in-long-term-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/259367\/","title":{"rendered":"NAPE President Sounds Alarm Over AI Monitoring of Patients in Long-Term Care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/nape-president-jerry-earle-october-2025.jpg\" class=\"header-image\" alt=\"NAPE President Sounds Alarm Over AI Monitoring of Patients in Long-Term Care\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">NAPE President Jerry Earle (VOCM News)<\/p>\n<p>The President of NAPE is concerned with what he calls privatization creep in the province\u2019s health care system. <\/p>\n<p>Jerry Earle says there are multiple and \u201calarming\u201d examples, particularly as it relates to the use of technology and AI in health care. <\/p>\n<p>Earle says AI has some practical uses in health care, but monitoring patients remotely through a company based in Ontario, is not an adequate replacement for hands-on personal care. <\/p>\n<p>He says they\u2019re hearing about a \u201cHalo\u201d system in long-term care where for all intents and purposes a robot will watch long-term care residents. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they go to get out of bed, the robot will send a message to somewhere in Ontario as we understand, and somebody in Ontario will call the nursing unit and say \u2018Mrs. Smith has just fallen out of bed\u2019 well, it\u2019s a little too late then\u201d says Earle. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we had sufficient staff on units in long-term care facilities they\u2019d be better able to care for, and provide the services.
