As the Toronto Blue Jays squared off against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6 of the World Series, a sight familiar to many East Coasters could be seen fluttering behind home plate.<\/p>\n
A Cape Breton flag was proudly held aloft by longtime Jays fan John Chisholm throughout the game in Toronto on Friday.<\/p>\n
“I went to the \u2026 World Series in ’92, but my seats were a little different. They were in the 500 level, with my dad and my two brothers, behind the lights,” Chisholm said with a laugh.<\/p>\n
Now, three decades later, Chisholm is a season ticket holder with seats right behind home plate. And with this prime real estate, he knew he wanted to shout out Cape Breton, his “favourite place in the world.”<\/p>\n
Chisholm’s father was born and raised in Troy, a community on the western shore of Cape Breton, near the Canso Causeway. He grew up visiting the area and has a lot of family still there.<\/p>\n
“This is a good time to give a little love to Cape Breton, shine a little light on it,” said Chisholm, who was born in Burlington, Ont., and lives there now. <\/p>\n
“Maybe some people in Canada will think about their vacations and book some time in Nova Scotia, go see Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail.”<\/p>\n
Chisholm’s flag caught the eye of many folks watching the game, and has been shared across social media, with one Cape Breton page dedicated to finding out who the fan was. “Whoever has the Cape Breton flag behind home plate, please reveal yourself!” read one comment. <\/p>\n
Chisholm, who is not on social media, said his brothers have enjoyed reading all the comments and sharing them with him.<\/p>\n
Chisholm said he saw the Jays’ march to the World Series unite much of the country under their banner.<\/p>\n
It’s a good feeling, he said, to know that Canadians coast to coast were tuning in to the games, and the flag was also in appreciation of that.<\/p>\n
“It’s magical,” he said. “The team represents Canada so well. They’re all hitting, they’re all doing their jobs, they’re pulling together \u2014 just like our country.”<\/p>\n
Los Angeles won the series 4-3, downing Toronto 5-4 in 11 innings in the decisive seventh game on Saturday.<\/p>\n
