{"id":261194,"date":"2025-11-04T14:18:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T14:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/261194\/"},"modified":"2025-11-04T14:18:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T14:18:08","slug":"the-art-of-the-possible-the-nottingham-art-gallery-being-run-by-citizens-assembly-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/261194\/","title":{"rendered":"The art of the possible: the Nottingham art gallery being run by citizens\u2019 assembly | Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI used to see this place on the street but I didn\u2019t know what was here, I didn\u2019t even know it was an art gallery,\u201d says Felix, a 20-year-old nursing student. \u201cAnd now I\u2019m here shaping its future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Felix is one of 40 residents of Hyson Green in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/nottingham\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nottingham<\/a> who run the show at New Art Exchange (NAE), which believes it is the first cultural institution in the world to hand permanent leadership to a citizens\u2019 assembly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">These people, representative of a diverse community that speaks 52 languages, decide everything from what events the gallery should put on, to where money should be spent and what artists should be exhibited. Photograph: Fabio De Paola\/The Guardian<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWithout citizens and community around the table shaping the direction and showing the horizon, we would quickly become an average organisation,\u201d says Saad Eddine Said, chief executive and artistic director at NAE, which is the UK\u2019s largest gallery dedicated to African, Caribbean and south Asian artists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis neighbourhood is such a huge treasure of culture and of talent so we wanted it to play a key role, not just in terms of consultancy, but in real terms of coleadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A street gallery outside the building, designed to entice people in, was removed after assembly members said it was intimidating and off-putting, and more money was invested in making the cafe a welcoming space that would bring people through the door instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">After reporting that a major problem in the area was a lack of places to socialise on a Friday evening, NAE started hosting socials, such as poetry and DJ events, which draw large crowds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe believe in [the assembly] and we don\u2019t want it to become just a trendy thing, just ticking boxes,\u201d says Said. \u201cRemoving the street gallery felt counterintuitive to us. There is no compromise in that conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Adam Roe, the gallery\u2019s executive director, says: \u201cI\u2019ve been asked: \u2018Do you think that you\u2019ve lost power as a result of this?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cActually, I think I\u2019ve gained power. Collectively, we\u2019ve got so much more knowledge because we\u2019re doing the things we know we need to do.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAnd some of the artists and the performers we work with now we probably would never have known about before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Citizens\u2019 assemblies have long been used in local democracy and public policy to gauge national opinion, but in recent years they have spread into other sectors \u2013 and cultural institutions are the latest to try using them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In August, the National Gallery announced it was creating a citizens\u2019 assembly of 50 people from across the UK who will make recommendations that will be built on by a smaller citizens\u2019 panel over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Birmingham Museum &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/art\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Art<\/a> Gallery recruited a citizens\u2019 jury in 2024 which published several recommendations, including later opening times and promoting the work of young people.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-17\" class=\"dcr-jzxpee\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1xjndtj\">Your weekly art world round-up, sketching out all the biggest stories, scandals and exhibitions<\/p>\n<p>Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain information about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. Photograph: Fabio De Paola\/The Guardian<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cLots of people were very sceptical and wondering whether anything would come of this,\u201d says assembly member Lily, a 21-year-old fine art graduate, sitting alongside Rudy, a 70-year-old retired youth worker. \u201cI\u2019m impressed they\u2019ve actually done the things we said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Many of the assembly members said they were tired of seeing Hyson Green, which has some of the highest deprivation rates in the country, receive attention for all the wrong reasons \u2013 crime, antisocial behaviour and fly-tipping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cI\u2019ve lived out here a long time, and I was sceptical, and I was cynical, because I\u2019ve seen so many initiatives come and go,\u201d says Kathy*, a retired resident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis area has been ignored and if people experience the negative for too long, it can disempower them. So for me, it has been a real boost.
