\n\tSydney Sweeney<\/a> is finally commenting on one of the year\u2019s silliest controversies: Backlash against the Euphoria star\u2019s American Eagle<\/a> jeans ad. <\/p>\n

\n\tSweeney spoke out about the uproar, which made headlines over the summer and saw everyone from Donald Trump to fellow celebrities to late-night hosts weighing in.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI did a jean ad,\u201d Sweeney told GQ<\/a>. \u201cI mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I\u2019m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSweeney added that \u201cit was surreal\u201d to have so many people, like the president, sounding off.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI kind of just put my phone away,\u201d she said. \u201cI was filming every day. I\u2019m filming\u00a0Euphoria,\u00a0so I\u2019m working 16-hour days and I don\u2019t really bring my phone on set, so I work and then I go home and I go to sleep. So I didn\u2019t really see a lot of it \u2026 I knew at the end of the day what that ad was for, and it was great jeans, it didn\u2019t affect me one way or the other.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSweeney noted she didn\u2019t issue a statement responding to the criticism at the time because \u201cI\u2019ve always believed that I\u2019m not here to tell people what to think \u2026 when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI know who I am,\u201d she said. \u201cI know what I value. I know that I\u2019m a kind person. I know that I love a lot, and I know that I\u2019m just excited to see what happens next. And so I don\u2019t really let other people define who I am.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tDespite the controversy \u2014 or perhaps because of it \u2014 American Eagle sales improved<\/a> during the second quarter and the company\u2019s stock price jumped 25 percent after the company crushed Wall Street estimates. CEO Jay Schottenstein cited \u201cthe success of recent marketing campaigns with Sydney Sweeney and\u00a0Travis Kelce<\/a>\u201d as a big reason why, generating some 40 billion impressions and a \u201cmeaningful improvement in the business.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSweeney revealed she actually knew the ad was working in real time. \u201cI was aware of the numbers as it was going,\u201d she said. \u201cSo when I saw all the headlines<\/a> [claiming] in-store visits were down a certain percentage, none of it was true. It was all made up, but nobody could say anything because [the company was] in their quiet period.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe \u201cSydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans\u201d ad debuted in late July and quickly became a culture war debate, particularly over a clip that had Sweeney saying, \u201cGenes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBecause Sweeney has blonde hair and blue eyes, users claimed that the ad<\/a> was designed to promote eugenics or was a nod to Nazi propaganda \u2014 despite American Eagle having a Jewish CEO at the helm and a long history of inclusive advertising. \u201cIt is one of the loudest and most obvious racialized dog whistles we\u2019ve seen and heard in a while,\u201d alleged a woman on TikTok. <\/p>\n

\n\tOthers dismissed the backlash by chalking it up to faux outrage from a generation that is too online looking for reasons to feel offended. \u201cThe hate is exhausting,\u201d wrote another user on TikTok. \u201cY\u2019all are mad at Sydney Sweeney because she\u2019s white, she\u2019s blonde, she\u2019s blue-eyed and she looks good. I am DEI\u2019d out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAmerican Eagle was just one of Sweeney\u2019s recent brand deals. Earlier this summer, she sold her literal bathwater as part of a soap formula for Dr. Squatch. She also has deals with Armani Beauty, Miu Miu, Laneige, HeyDude, Bai, Baskin Robbins and Ford.
