The Paramount mountain has experienced an avalanche of change ever since Skydance and new CEO David Ellison took over<\/a> this summer. In just a few short months, the company\u2019s fresh owners have laid off thousands of employees<\/a>, installed controversial columnist Bari Weiss<\/a> as CBS News\u2019 editor-in-chief amidst a larger overhaul<\/a> of the network, lost TV golden boy Taylor Sheridan<\/a>, and even spent time preparing multiple bids<\/a> to buy yet another entertainment behemoth. That avalanche seems to have slowed down slightly in its approach to the company\u2019s cable brands, however.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite TV Media chair George Cheeks\u2019 assertion today that the company is aiming to \u201creimagine\u201d brands like MTV, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon, its actual strategy seems to be more along the lines of \u201cif it ain\u2019t broke, don\u2019t fix it.\u201d After thanking staff (well, the ones who weren\u2019t let go in this particular round of cuts) for their \u201cresilience during this difficult time of transformation,\u201d Cheeks wrote the following in an internal memo, shared by Deadline<\/a>: \u201cOur purpose is clear: to reinvent and strengthen our brands to build a stronger future that\u2019s rooted in exceptional storytelling across entertainment, news and sports.\u201d<\/p>\n

It seems the powers that be think Paramount is doing some exceptional storytelling already. \u201cOur cable brands will focus on a more curated slate, optimizing programming and marketing resources to amplify what resonates most,\u201d the note continued. \u201cThat means leaning into franchises like Spongebob, Paw Patrol, RuPaul\u2019s Drag Race, South Park, Ms. Pat, and The Daily Show<\/a>, while continuing to develop new IP across our studios and seeking new ways to amplify and connect with audiences.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

So, in essence, the big new plan is to keep doing what works while looking for new stuff that also works. At least this should come as a rare bit of good news for fans of RuPaul, Jon Stewart, and the rest, at a time when that was far from guaranteed.<\/p>\n
