The European champion endured a nightmare race on Sunday at the X2O Badkamers Trofee\u2019s second round in Lokeren, Belgium. A string of mechanical issues derailed his chances and left him visibly exasperated.<\/p>\n<p>Joris Nieuwenhuis <a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingmagazine.ca\/cyclocross\/joris-nieuwenhuis-opens-his-2025-2026-account-with-x2o-trofee-triumph\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">got rid of Michael Vanthourenhout to take his first win of the season<\/a>. Nys, winner of Saturday\u2019s opening round in his season debut, had a terrible day, finishing 3:37 down. He dropped down to fourth on overall time in the series.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything that could go wrong today, went wrong,\u201d Thibau Nys told <a href=\"https:\/\/sporza.be\/nl\/2025\/11\/02\/thibau-nys-baalt-na-opeenstapeling-van-pech-waarbij-zijn-vader-schuld-bekent-er-valt-niet-veel-uit-te-praten~1762093168356\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sporza<\/a>. \u201cI had the legs I wanted\u2014I felt really good. I missed my start a bit, but I moved up quickly. Then I switched to a lighter tread, rode into a pit right after the pit zone, and my shifters dropped down. Once that happened, it was over,\u201d he said. \u201cIf it keeps piling up, you just can\u2019t manage it anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His father, former world champ Sven Nys, admitted the shifter issue was on him. \u201cYes, that was my fault,\u201d he told Sporza. \u201cThat should not happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked if there would be tension at home that night, Thibau said everything would be OK. \u201cNo, I don\u2019t think so. I\u2019m eating at my mom\u2019s. There\u2019s not much to talk about\u2014it\u2019s okay,\u201d Thibau said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the frustration, the young Belgian managed to find some optimism. \u201cI\u2019m satisfied with the feeling. I\u2019d recovered well from yesterday, and I had a lot of punch in the first half of the race,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>It was, as his dad summed up, one of those days in cyclocross that no amount of power can save\u2014only lessons learned for the next start line.
