{"id":262670,"date":"2025-11-05T05:36:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T05:36:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/262670\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T05:36:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T05:36:09","slug":"a-colossal-wave-is-rippling-through-the-milky-way-gaia-data-reveals-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/262670\/","title":{"rendered":"A Colossal Wave Is Rippling Through The Milky Way, Gaia Data Reveals : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The motions of stars in the Milky Way have revealed a giant outward ripple, set off by a massive event sometime in our galaxy&#8217;s wild past.<\/p>\n<p>In a new analysis of data collected by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/gaias-farewell-gift-is-the-best-milky-way-map-weve-ever-seen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gaia space-mapping spacecraft<\/a> and a database of pulsating stars, astronomers have measured the up-and-down motions of stars in the outer regions of the galactic disk and found patterns consistent with a wave-like corrugation.<\/p>\n<p>What generated this ripple is unknown, but one possible culprit is an encounter with another galaxy \u2013 likely the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-milky-way-is-all-bent-out-of-shape-because-of-an-ancient-galactic-collision\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sagittarius dwarf galaxy<\/a> currently interacting with the Milky Way \u2013 punching through the galactic disk, like a pebble dropping into a pond.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-collision-history-of-the-milky-way-reveals-the-mysterious-kraken-galaxy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Family Tree&#8217; of The Milky Way Reveals The Fate of The Mysterious Kraken Galaxy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This finding suggests, once again, that the Milky Way isn&#8217;t just a static object hanging out in space, but a dynamically active galaxy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/astronomers-find-the-hollowed-out-shell-of-a-dwarf-galaxy-that-collided-with-the-milky-way\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">still ringing from past<\/a> and continuing processes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Taken together, these findings lead us to explore the hypothesis that there is a vertical wave extending over a large portion of the outer disk that is moving away from the galactic center,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1051\/0004-6361\/202451668\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the researchers write in their paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This wave, detected in young stellar populations, could primarily be part of the gaseous component of the galactic disk, revealed by the kinematics of the young stars which have inherited the bulk motions of the gas from which they were born.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/disk-map.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"361\" class=\"size-full wp-image-178751\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The positions and motions of the stars in the analysis, mapped against the disk of the Milky Way, viewed from above (left) and side-on (right). Poggio et al., 2025<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s only been in recent years that astronomers have started to piece together the three-dimensional architecture of the Milky Way galaxy.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s largely thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Gaia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gaia<\/a>, a space-based observatory that spent more than a decade <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-map-charts-the-milky-way-s-dramatic-history-of-violence\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mapping the three-dimensional positions<\/a> of the galaxy&#8217;s stars from its orbit around the Sun.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t just the positions, though. Gaia also collected data on how those stars are moving through the galaxy \u2013 information that reveals the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-vast-stream-of-stars-flowing-near-the-sun-reveals-more-of-our-galaxy-s-violent-history\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ghosts of dead galaxies<\/a>, for example, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-nearest-star-cluster-to-the-sun-is-being-torn-apart-by-something-we-can-t-see\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ongoing gravitational interactions<\/a> that are not obvious at a glance.<\/p>\n<p>One other thing the Gaia data has been clarifying is that the Milky Way&#8217;s disk is not serene and flat, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-milky-way-s-disc-is-all-warped-and-twisted\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">warped<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/0004-637X\/801\/2\/105\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">corrugated<\/a> at its extremities \u2013 possible evidence that something heavy took place in the galaxy&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762320968_553_0.jpg\" alt=\"YouTube Thumbnail\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" class=\"youtube-thumbnail-preview\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> frameborder=&#8221;0\u2033 allow=&#8221;accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share&#8221; referrerpolicy=&#8221;strict-origin-when-cross-origin&#8221; allowfullscreen&gt;<\/p>\n<p>In the new study, a team of astronomers led by Eloisa Poggio of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics wanted to dig deeper into this strange behavior.<\/p>\n<p>They turned to two types of stars: around 17,000 young giant stars, out to distances up to 23,000 light-years from the Solar System; and around 3,400 <a href=\"https:\/\/astronomy.swin.edu.au\/cosmos\/c\/cepheid+variable+stars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cepheid variable stars<\/a>, out to distances up to 49,000 light-years from the Solar System.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Milky Way&#8217;s stellar disk is about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfa.harvard.edu\/research\/science-field\/milky-way-galaxy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">100,000 light-years across<\/a>, these samples provide good coverage of the disk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/spark-into-space-comp\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Mid-Article-Promo-Astro-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Win a $10,000 Space Coast Adventure Holiday\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-177074 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next, the researchers used data on these stars from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/astronomers-have-mapped-stars-to-the-anticentre-of-the-milky-way\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DR3<\/a>, Gaia&#8217;s most recent data release at the time the research was being conducted, as well as other surveys to work out how these stars are moving in the Milky Way. Specifically, they were looking for vertical velocity, the signature that the disk of the Milky Way is moving up and down.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s where it gets really interesting. Both populations of stars showed the same coherent vertical pattern of movement, with alternating peaks and troughs, like ripples in a pond.<\/p>\n<p>Also like ripples in a pond, the amplitude of these ripples increases with distance from the galactic center, reaching higher above and lower below the galactic plane at the outer reaches of the disk.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/amplitude.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"364\" class=\"size-full wp-image-178750\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Compelling evidence for outward propagating ripples in the Milky Way. Poggio et al., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This observed behavior is consistent with what we would expect from a wave,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Gaia\/Gaia_discovers_our_galaxy_s_great_wave\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Poggio says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers don&#8217;t know exactly where the source of the wave lies or what caused it. The Sagittarius dwarf galaxy is <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41586-018-0510-7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one option<\/a>. Another option is that it could be related to the recently discovered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-mysterious-wave-like-structure-in-our-galaxy-found-to-be-slowly-slithering\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Radcliffe wave<\/a>, which stretches 9,000 light-years down one of the Milky Way&#8217;s spiral arms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, the Radcliffe Wave is a much smaller filament, and located in a different portion of the galaxy&#8217;s disk compared to the wave studied in our work,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Gaia\/Gaia_discovers_our_galaxy_s_great_wave\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Poggio says<\/a>. &#8220;The two waves may or may not be related. That&#8217;s why we would like to do more research.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The next release of Gaia data, DR4, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmos.esa.int\/web\/gaia\/release\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is expected to drop in December 2026<\/a>.
