For several months, ever since before the lockout ended in 2005, I had been posting monthly fantasy rankings – the Top 300 – on this webpage because The Hockey News had to let their webmaster go (thanks to said lockout). My page was getting pretty good traffic, and I added my thoughts on it. I called them “Ramblings”. Those thoughts are what you’re still reading today. And those rankings are the same ones I posted just this past Monday. Every month for the Rankings. Every day for the Ramblings. I even post on Christmas. In Christmas of 2008 I posted that I had become a father right here in the Ramblings. Yes, my first daughter was born on Christmas day.

But 20 years ago, on November 5, I decided to make things more legitimate so I went to godaddy to register fantasyhockey. Well that, of course, was taken. And not only that, but Ian Gooding managed it! So I decided to use Dobber. Oddly enough – taken! To this day, that’s still a dead page and they want like $100,000 for it. Alright, I’ll go with DobberHockey.

And so, a brand was launched.

To celebrate this milestone, I have drastically – drastically! – reduced a lot of items in the shop. For today only. The older Guides and Prospect Reports are FREE. This year’s guide and FPR are reduced by about 80%. I slashed the price of the DFS tools by $60. Anyway, go check it out in the shop, if you want to look at older items or you didn’t try the guide this year, it’s a cheap way to check out my work and decide if you want it next year (you will).

Onto the Ramblings, as you have to come to rely on for more than 20 years…

*

Noah Ostlund, in his 13th NHL game, picked up his first NHL goal. He played on a line with Isak Rosen and Jack Quinn in what was a pretty effective line. Here is the goal:

Ostlund is one of the top prospects to own in fantasy, but his slow AHL start last year will probably be mirrored when he starts in the NHL full time. But he’ll get going eventually.

Karel Vejmelka only had to make 17 saves in an OT win, but he added an assist which will help some leagues. He hasn’t been as good as he was last year, but on this team he doesn’t have to be. I really like Utah for this year. This is a great goalie to own as he will get 60 games in and I can see at least 35-38 wins, completely obliterating his career highs.

*

Trevor Zegras is back! Fingers crossed for his health, which can take a player down at the worst possible time. But if he can play the full season, he’ll silence all doubters if he hasn’t already. Two more assists Tuesday and the shootout winner. Sick:

He has 15 points in 13 games now, and 10 in his last six. The Flyers bought low, and any dynasty league owners who acquired him in the summer or last year – they bought low too.

Jamie Drysdale power-play tracker: Just over 34.5 minutes on the power play, zero points. Every time I do Ramblings this year I’ll try to remember to update this tracker. In his entire career he has had over 460 minutes on the power play and 22 PPPts.

Meanwhile, Cam York is up to five PPPts. He didn’t get PP time last season. This year, he started out with a couple of short shifts in the first two games. Then he got a bit more in Game 3 – and picked up two PPPts. Now he’s getting regular PP time and he seems to be producing every time. I wonder what the breaking point is where he completely takes over the top QB job and Drysdale gets the scraps?

It must be wonderful being a Montreal fan. The Calder Trophy last year, and unless Matthew Schaeffer takes him down, Ivan Demidov will take it this year. And that Demidov vs. Schaeffer battle will be incredible – I’m sure we’ll change our mind 50 times as to which kid will win it. Either way, the Habs already had a future core kind of in place, and it’s like Hutson and Demidov take that to the next level. What a great job by management and scouting. Demidov was supposed to go second in 2024 and he went fifth? That was some nice luck. And how did Hutson get passed on 61 times before the Habs took him at 62? The latter is obviously size bias, and the former is the Russia bias. To Montreal’s gain. Anyway, Demidov two more points Sunday.

Demidov is a difference maker. At this point, he could have me on one wing and the hot dog vendor on the other wing and he’d get his points while giving us a few points in the process. But the reality is, he has (another rookie) Oliver Kapanen and Alex Newhook on his line – and he’s making them better. Newhook was blanked Tuesday, but he still has nine points in 13 games, which so far is his career-best scoring rate. Kapanen was also blanked, but he’s looking like 40 points might happen, which is a fine freshman year. His pass on that third goal was disgusting:

*

Matthew Schaefer, by the way, picked up his 11th point Tuesday and has 11 in 13. He and Demidov are starting to pull away in the rookie scoring race.

*

Nik Ehlers finally scored his first goal in a Carolina uniform. He was moved to a line with Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake and the move paid dividends. That was Andrei Svechnikov‘s spot. Svechnikov, similarly snakebitten, was moved to a line with Sebastian Aho and Taylor Hall. Coach Rod Brind’Amour has split up his entire first line, sticking each of them with new linemates.

With Shayne Gostisbehere sidelined, Sean Walker has been moved up to the PP, where he rarely plays other than in his first full season. He picked up two points, one on the power play.

What to do with Artemi Panarin? The Rangers still can’t score and this is a player who had 88 points last year, which was his lowest since 2019. He’s 34 so he has fantasy owners worried. I consider him a buy low player right now. Yes, his 100-point days are behind him and his 90-point days are probably behind him as well. But I still think 80+ is in the cards. He’s in a contract year so I would find it very odd that he didn’t shoot the lights out. His metrics indicate a bounce-back – his 5on5 S% is a career-low 6.6%, his xG% 5v5 is a career high, he’s getting a bigger chunk of PP time than he’s ever had and his IPP is way below where he’s usually at. Everything points to him getting the bounces soon.

Every line the Rangers rolled were out-chanced. Again.

They can’t score and Gabe Perreault has 10 points in nine games for Hartford. He has eight points in his last four games. I don’t think it will be long before he gets the call. Conor Sheary? Come on…

*

Connor McDavid had two more points Tuesday and has ascended to the top of the NHL scoring race. Amazing. I have the privilege of having him on my team for the first time for a full season in one league, and I had been wondering why he’s doing so poorly. I feel like I blinked and voila – here he is.

Is Jack Roslovic the best waiver wire pickup of the season? Can we declare that in November? It’s sure looking good, now that he is finding crazy chemistry with Leon Draisaitl at even strength and getting first unit PP time. I suspect Zach Hyman will mess with the latter part, which will really take Roslovic down a notch. But if he racks up enough points before that, the coach will be very reluctant to remove him from a deployment that’s working. My instinct here is to buy, not sell. Two more points Tuesday, seven points in six games, he’s seen PP time in the last three games and has PPPts in each of those games. His line alongside Leon Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin is really clicking. Podkolzin’s starting to pick it up and I wonder if his first 40-point season is in the cards.

Isaac Howard‘s ice time was down to eight minutes. I think he’s going to be sent to the AHL when Zach Hyman returns. Not for good – for a month or so, to get his legs, his confidence, and come back on a high.

*

Another defenseman who started off with no PP time at all but is starting to get some and picking up PPPts to keep earning more is Brock Faber. Another point on the PP Tuesday, and he has four of them in his last five games (and has seven points in that span overall).

A lot of YouTube clips here today, bear with me. Lots of things worth pointing out. Check out this play that was ruled a goal. What do you think? I mean…the first shot hit the side of the net and would have hit the side of the net. The second shot would have went in but…that second shot happened because the puck bounced off the side of the net while the net was turned around! This was ruled a goal because the refs say it would have went in had the net not been moved – but I say it went across the line thanks to the net being off and allowing the rebound to happen! This was the winning goal in overtime. Anyway, take a look:

Anyway, thank you refs for helping Marcus Johansson, Kirill Kaprizov and Brock Faber to each get us a free point.

*

Darren Raddysh went from Victor Hedman as his defense partner, to Emil Lilleberg, to the press box. And now it’s undrafted free agent signee Charle-Edouard D’Astous who is partnered with Lilleberg and getting second unit PP time. He was signed in May after starring for a year in Liiga and a year in the SHL (39 points in 49 games, second amongst all defensemen). He was cut in camp and picked up three points in four AHL games and then the 27-year-old was called up and is earning his spot. Three points in six games so far, and nine PIM if your league still tracks those. He has a track record of racking up PIM to the tune of more than one per game, so there is multi-cat potential if this late-bloomer can stick.

Victor Olofsson picked up two more goals. He’s staying healthy and as long as that happens (don’t bet on it), he’ll continue producing. That five-point game last week was an eye opener. I’m glad I dropped him in my smaller dynasty league in the summer. Not really. Five of his points this season have come on the power play.

*

Cutter Gauthier scored a hat trick and now has 10 on the season. His shot volume and his chemistry with Beckett Senecke is making him a 35-goal candidate – and there is some debate as to whether he can be a 40-goal guy. I need to see more before I go that far. Talk to me again at Christmas. But his shot volume is way up and he has a promising setup man feeding him again and again. The points against it: his S% is a little high even for him, his 5on5 S% is a little high, and finally and not to be underrated – Sennecke is a rookie who will slow down as the league tightens up.

*

And a shout out to the longest tenured writer here – Rick Roos, whose article you will see posted today.
