I loaded the disc in, put the black corded earbuds into my ears, and pressed play. Within seconds, the explosive jolt of \u201cHabits\u201d convinced me that the Walkman was broken. To the untrained ear, songs like \u201cInferno\u201d and \u201cIn It\u201d can be a nauseating, all-consuming nightmare. But OsamaSon takes a lot of time crafting his seismic sound. Dialing everything up to 11 is a very serious job, and the 22-year-old rapper knows the difference between what\u2019s just noise and what\u2019s a certified hit. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHis fans do too. The album hit No. 81 on the Billboard 200, and that mutual understanding has led to an unbelievably ravenous \u2014 and at times incredibly toxic \u2014 fanbase that OsamaSon loves, but is often frustrated by. It also explains why early album copies were sent out via Walkman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe rapper\u2019s previous tape, Jump Out, was almost <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=r9gil74RxRo\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=r9gil74RxRo\" target=\"_blank\">completely derailed by leakers<\/a> and hackers before it dropped in January. Hundreds of songs, both old and new, continuously found their way online, and the situation became so dire that Osama\u2019s own team <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/reviews\/albums\/osamason-jump-out\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/reviews\/albums\/osamason-jump-out\/\" target=\"_blank\">allegedly<\/a> released a 10-track tape called Leaks Tape to help keep fans engaged. Osama notes that even though Psykotic\u2019s rollout was much cleaner, the leaking issue persist to this day \u2014 and that it\u2019s not just his music being posted online anymore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBelow, Billboard chats with OsamaSon before his show at Brooklyn Paramount to talk about his new album and how he\u2019s overcome the leakers, haters, and controversies that surround his art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNow that Psykotic is out in the world, how are you feeling about this project versus Jump Out?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI feel way better about this project than the Jump Out project. When I dropped Jump Out, there were a lot of mixed opinions. I don\u2019t feel like they understood it. I\u2019m seeing more positive opinions on Psykotic. I feel like they received it a lot better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTake me through the earliest stages of Psykotic, and how you found your sound. It seems like you really knew what you wanted the album to sound like.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tJust experimenting and trying s\u2014t that I like personally, and not trying to be too inspired by other people. It\u2019s just me going to the studio, me recording myself, recording, and recording, and recording. I got so many songs, and people might think the songs I put out are just what I\u2019m making right then and there. How many songs are on Psykotic? 17? Out of those 17, I had to pick from like 1,000 I made this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHow do you narrow it down?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt depends on the feeling I\u2019m going for. So Psykotic was supposed to be psychotic, obviously. I\u2019m trying to go for the loud noise, super good mix, but still crazy where you\u2019re either gonna be surprised by the lyrics or the beat. I don\u2019t ever go off of, \u201cYo, this snippet is goin\u2019 viral; I gotta drop it.\u201d That adds into it, but if I don\u2019t personally like it, I\u2019m not gonna drop it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYour sound is definitely unique to you, but at the same time, I can hear the XXXTENTACION, Lil Uzi Vert influence on your music. Do you intentionally pull from them, or is their impact more through osmosis?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBeing humans in general, I feel like we do a lot of s\u2014t unintentionally all the time without even knowing. Sometimes I be makin\u2019 a song, and I\u2019m like, \u201cThis is the craziest song; I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever heard anything like this.\u201d Then I end up going back to some old, old music, and I hear Uzi say a bar that I happened to say in a new song. I didn\u2019t do that on purpose \u2014 that happens all the time. I feel like that\u2019s just being an artist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYou seem intent on pushing outside your creative comfort zone. How do you feel about the term \u201crage rap\u201d to describe your music? Does that term ever make you feel boxed in?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNot really, \u2019cause they label me something new all the time. First it\u2019s underground rap, then it\u2019s dark plug, and now it\u2019s rage rap. I feel like it\u2019s always gonna change, so I don\u2019t really try to dwell too much on that aspect of it. It\u2019s based on your opinion. Some say I might make music for the ladies, some might say I make music for the mosh pits. I might say I make music for myself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTell me about how that fueled your approach to the album\u2019s cover art. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.primetimer.com\/news\/very-corny-and-performative-osamasons-psykotic-artwork-shared-by-designer-stunmic-sparks-divided-reactions-online\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">That started<\/a> quite a bit of controversy online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt\u2019s a fire cover art, man! It\u2019s not even nothin\u2019 to get \u2014 like if you want me to keep it 100% with you, bro \u2014 it wasn\u2019t nothin\u2019 crazy. Like we wasn\u2019t tryin\u2019 to be on some blasphemous s\u2014t\u2014Man, you know what?\u2014We were. Yeah, we were trying to disrespect all the religions! F\u2014k \u2019em, f\u2014k everybody. F\u2013k how everybody feels. That\u2019s what the cover is, man: F\u2014k you. I sent this s\u2014t to my mom and everything, and she was like, \u201cThis is perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI saw something on Reddit about how you should have instead leaned into some Osama Bin Laden terrorism vibes because of your name. It left me thinking, \u201cThat can\u2019t possibly be a more preferred branding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYeah! Like should I be a terrorist or a devil worshipper? I\u2019d rather be a devil worshipper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDo you feel in those moments you\u2019re kinda taking the power back from your haters in a way?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYeah, and at first I didn\u2019t really realize it. I wasn\u2019t using my power how I was supposed to, bro. I cared about what people thought, and I\u2019m at the point where I don\u2019t give a single f\u2014k about what anybody thinks, because it doesn\u2019t matter! The only opinion that matters to me is my mom\u2019s. I don\u2019t give a f\u2014k about anybody else\u2019s opinion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRegardless, it also seems like this was your first leak-free rollout of an album.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI mean, I feel like my fans just accepted that it comes with the s\u2014t. I feel like they accepted the leaks, the crazy s\u2014t that happens behind my name\u2014I don\u2019t know. I feel like people are more used to what\u2019s going on now. When it first started happening, I\u2019m not gonna say I was the first to go through it, but the rate I was goin\u2019 through it\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt was unbelievable how often your music was getting leaked out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYeah! Even for myself, I understand this way more. I just feel like it\u2019s my life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHow did the leaks influence your approach to making this album and the subsequent rollout? I imagine it must have made you pretty paranoid about sharing music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt was hard. I had to learn how to not feel some type of way about every leak. I used to just be in my feelings a lot, bro. I feel like the music I was making was super hard. And even if I didn\u2019t put it out at that time, with [leakers] putting it out for me, it was kinda like\u2026 like, you see all the reactions to it, the feedback, and you\u2019re just like, \u201cI coulda dropped this on my own.\u201d Like, I just \u2014 hm, I just gotta \u2014 It\u2019s hard, bro. It\u2019s my life too, so it\u2019s like, I don\u2019t know. I just don\u2019t feel like I\u2019m ever gonna get away from it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFrom your perspective, what happened, and why have the leaks been so persistent?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHonestly, the attention the leakers were getting from it \u2014 with me being an up-and-coming artist and not a lot of people going through the same thing that I went through \u2014 it was kinda like that shock factor. You see [the leakers] are getting so lit, and that\u2019s what it is, bro. These leakers are getting lit behind it. It gives them a name. They don\u2019t have to show their face or post selfies. They just leak my music and get 2,000, 3,000 followers. For me to get 3,000 followers, I had to post like five trailers. I had to really work for it. All they gotta do is post my leak. It\u2019s been kinda weird, man; it\u2019s fried.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI genuinely don\u2019t understand. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever have a firm answer on it because it\u2019s always different. Sometimes the leakers will be like, \u201cYo, f\u2014k you and your whole family. I\u2019m gonna leak everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThey\u2019ve messaged you and said that to you?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYeah, they leaked the address to my mom\u2019s house! They got my mom\u2019s house raided. Then the week after that, they\u2019ll text me and be like, \u201cYo, my bad bro. I was tweakin\u2019. I\u2019m sorry, I really love you to death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThat\u2019s so crazy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYeah, it\u2019s pretty weird, and I\u2019ll never fully, genuinely understand it. I just gotta deal with it. But you kinda learn how to avoid it in certain ways\u2014not send your music out to people, put music on hard drives, s\u2014t like that. But you can\u2019t 100% avoid it. Some people be like, \u201cYo, just don\u2019t send your music to nobody.\u201d You can\u2019t not send your music to nobody! You got engineers, you got creatives that can\u2019t f\u2014kin\u2019 create unless they\u2019re hearing the music. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYou want them to create on a blank canvas, somethin\u2019 that doesn\u2019t match the music at all? My manager has to hear the music, my producer has to hear the music. Maybe they wanna switch somethin\u2019 up. It\u2019s kinda impossible not to send s\u2014t out to get worked on. If I don\u2019t send it out, it\u2019s never gonna drop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt\u2019s true, it\u2019s not like you can wait for all these people to get in a room with you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYou feel me? Then if I do send it out, leakers somehow have been able to get their hands on this, or they hack my phone, or they just happen to hack this phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSo is that how the idea of sending the album out with a Walkman came about?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhat\u2019s the Walkman?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe CD player!<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOh, that was [my team\u2019s] idea. It was a cool idea. It was pretty fire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHow much did that help?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThere were some songs that leaked out, but from [the CD copy], zero leaks, for sure. I think it was from me sending songs to my producer some months ago. I wasn\u2019t even mad about it. It\u2019s better than the f\u2014kin\u2019 last project. That whole s\u2014t leaked before it came out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI\u2019m not gonna lie; I listened to the album on that Walkman, and I thought that my headphones were distorted or blown out. Then I realized that\u2019s just your vibe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYeah, a lot of people were sayin\u2019 that. It was probably just the mix, not gonna lie. We were mixing and mastering it till that s\u2014t came out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDid the leaks hinder your creative approach to making music?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSometimes. It depends on how I feel about that song specifically. They was leakin\u2019 bulls\u2014t that I knew I was never going to drop, and I was like, f\u2014k it; y\u2019all can have it. But there have been times where we\u2019re like planning on dropping s\u2014t, like we shot videos, trailers, and somehow, as soon as we start working on the actual song, they leak it. Like, are they tapped into my phone? There\u2019s been times where I\u2019ve been having conversations on the phone, saying, \u201cAlright, let\u2019s shoot this video tomorrow.\u201d I\u2019ll wake up, and [my team] is like, \u201cYo, you\u2019re never gonna believe what just happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHave you met any other rappers at your age who are experiencing this?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNo, I try to ask my peers all the time. I mean, I know Che went through it a little bit. There was this app called Untitled, and some leakers run the app. Whenever you log into it, they can go through every single person who\u2019s ever made an account. It\u2019s supposed to be a private place to upload your music, but that\u2019s how a lot of people got hit. And just SoundCloud having horrible protection. Bro, you can hack SoundCloud with a link, and you can literally start typing in random letters to get into people\u2019s accounts. It\u2019s super easy. But yeah, I tried to ask my peers, but I don\u2019t know. Some people\u2019s music is just not wanted that bad, you know what I mean? Or some people just put out a lot of music to where their fans are satisfied. [My fans] just aren\u2019t satisfied. I\u2019m pretty sure they\u2019re just anxious and wanna be the first people to know what we\u2019re doin\u2019 next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tYeah, it\u2019s not just the leakers, but your fans are unbelievably hungry for OsamaSon music. In a way, it\u2019s flattering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIt\u2019s flattering and frustrating, not gonna lie. It\u2019s a lot more flattering. I used to work a 9-to-5, bro. People used to judge me. I used to check people into hotels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHas that level of fan engagement this early on in your career been overwhelming at all?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNah, I\u2019m not gonna say I feel like I deserve it, but I always felt like I was meant for this life. I didn\u2019t have plans on doing anything else. Like, it\u2019s fire, man. This is exactly what I want, even with the leaks and stuff. When I was a kid, seeing [Playboi Carti] get leaked, or Uzi get leaked and s\u2014t \u2014 those are the greatest of our generation. Literally the greatest, you feel me? <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSo that s\u2014t was inspiring! Like, \u201cYo, everybody wants to hear his s\u2014t. Like, this is crazy! When they gonna start leaking my music? That\u2019s when I know I\u2019m up!\u201d Then it started happening, and I was like\u2026 did I really want that? But I kinda did, when I was a kid!
