{"id":263143,"date":"2025-11-05T10:41:49","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T10:41:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/263143\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T10:41:49","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T10:41:49","slug":"canadas-heavy-oil-finds-new-fans-as-global-demand-rises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/263143\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada\u2019s heavy oil finds new fans as global demand rises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Once priced at a steep discount to its lighter, sweeter counterparts, Canadian oil has earned growing admiration\u2014and market share\u2014among new customers in Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s oil exports are primarily \u201cheavy\u201d oil from the Alberta oil sands, compared to oil from more conventional \u201clight\u201d plays like the Permian Basin in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>One way to think of it is that heavy oil is thick and does not flow easily, while light oil is thin and flows freely, like fudge compared to apple juice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe refining industry wants heavy oil. We are actually in a shortage of heavy oil globally right now, and you can see that in the prices,\u201d said Susan Bell, senior vice-president of downstream research with Rystad Energy.<\/p>\n<p>A narrowing price gap<\/p>\n<p>Alberta\u2019s heavy oil producers generally receive a lower price than light oil producers, partly a result of different crude quality but mainly because of the cost of transportation, <a href=\"https:\/\/commodityinsights.spglobal.com\/rs\/325-KYL-599\/images\/2020%20Dec%20-%20What%20is%20different%20about%20differentials.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to<\/a> S&amp;P Global.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cdifferential\u201d between Western Canadian Select (WCS) and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) blew out to nearly US$50 per barrel in 2018 because of pipeline bottlenecks, forcing Alberta to step in and cut production.<\/p>\n<p>So far this year, the differential has narrowed to as little as US$10 per barrel, averaging around US$12, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gljpc.com\/price-forecasts\/price-charts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to<\/a> GLJ Petroleum Consultants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe differential between WCS and WTI is the narrowest I\u2019ve seen in three decades working in the industry,\u201d Bell said.<\/p>\n<p>Trans Mountain Expansion opens the door to Asia<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianenergycentre.ca\/?attachment_id=16490\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16490 nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16490\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-16490 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/240525_WMT-Tanker-27-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1440\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-16490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oil tanker docked at the Westridge Marine Terminal in Burnaby, B.C. Photo courtesy Trans Mountain Corporation<\/p>\n<p>The price boost is thanks to the Trans Mountain expansion, which opened a new gateway to Asia in May 2024 by nearly tripling the pipeline\u2019s capacity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This helps fill the supply void left by other major regions that export heavy oil \u2013 Venezuela and Mexico \u2013 where production is declining or unsteady.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Canadian oil exports outside the United States reached a record <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.cer-rec.gc.ca\/CommodityStatistics\/Statistics.aspx?language=english\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">525,000 barrels per day<\/a> in July 2025, the latest month of data available from the Canada Energy Regulator.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>China leads Asian buyers since the expansion went into service, along with Japan, Brunei and Singapore, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-10-16\/china-s-appetite-for-canadian-oil-is-headed-for-all-time-high?utm_source=chatgpt.com&amp;embedded-checkout=true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianenergycentre.ca\/?attachment_id=16492\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16492 nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-16492\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/exports-non-us.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"572\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Asian refineries see opportunity in heavy oil<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are seeing now is a lot of refineries in the Asian market have been exposed long enough to WCS and now are comfortable with taking on regular shipments,\u201d Bell said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Birn, chief analyst for Canadian oil markets at S&amp;P Global, said rising demand for heavier crude in Asia comes from refineries expanding capacity to process it and capture more value from lower-cost feedstocks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve invested in capital improvements on the front end to convert heavier oils into more valuable refined products,\u201d said Birn, who also heads S&amp;P\u2019s Center of Emissions Excellence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Refiners in the U.S. Gulf Coast and Midwest made similar investments over the past 40 years to capitalize on supply from Latin America and the oil sands, he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While oil sands output has grown, supplies from Latin America have declined.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico\u2019s state oil company, Pemex, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pemex.com\/en\/investors\/financial-information\/Paginas\/results.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> it produced roughly 1.6 million barrels per day in the second quarter of 2025, a steep drop from 2.3 million in 2015 and 2.6 million in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Venezuela\u2019s oil production, which was nearly 2.9 million barrels per day in 2010, was just 965,000 barrels per day this September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opec.org\/monthly-oil-market-report.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to<\/a> OPEC.<\/p>\n<p>The case for more Canadian pipelines<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianenergycentre.ca\/?attachment_id=16493\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16493 nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16493\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Strathcona_Resources_21209_424-e1761790501654.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1702\" height=\"1702\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-16493\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Worker at an oil sands SAGD processing facility in northern Alberta.
