Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images | Kirby Lee-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"64\">Led by Skype cofounder Geoff Prentice and former Facebook executive Grady Burnett, Project B plans to begin play in Europe and Asia in November of 2026 and play through April of 2027, so it would not directly compete with the WNBA\u2014at least not yet.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"67\">However, given Project B has high-profile investors like Candace Parker, Steve Young, Novak Djokovic, and Sloane Stephens, in addition to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/onsi\/womens-fastbreak\/news\/diana-taurasi-s-perfect-take-on-saudi-backed-women-s-league-turns-heads-01k86bk1v84g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">much discussed partnership<\/a> with Sela, an entertainment company owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund; it&#8217;s a safe bet there are bigger plans afoot.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Nneka is wrong for this as the WNBPA PRESIDENT. If there&#8217;s a WNBA lockout next season after all the work women before them put in to make this league visible, I&#8217;m going to be pissed. The 66 women who comprise the league are expected to receive higher pay than the WNBA offers and equity, something Ogwumike pointed to as a reason for joining. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6g\">\u201cIt\u2019s not something that\u2019s usually offered to us, and by us, I mean women athletes,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ogwumike-project-b-9c6e10a7a65dc5422b51410315b73be1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told the Associated Press<\/a>. \u201cSo, for there to be an entry level of equity across the board was eye-catching. Sylvanie-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6z\">Ogwumike&#8217;s signing is significant for a few reasons, first being that she is at the head of the negotiating table for the players in talks with the WNBA\u2014with her statement about equity jiving with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/onsi\/womens-fastbreak\/wnba\/adam-silver-s-sharing-stance-spotlights-wnba-dollar-dilemma-01k85wkx2pzc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">revenue sharing being a sticking point<\/a> in the discussions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-16\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"72\">It also further legitimizes another earning option, as the existence of Unrivaled has already been a hot-button topic surrounding the back-and-forth between the league and the players, particularly as it pertains to the comments Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier (a co-founder of Unrivaled) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/onsi\/womens-fastbreak\/news\/napheesa-collier-puts-worst-wnba-leadership-on-blast-with-scorched-earth-statement-01k6dsg2sftv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">made blasting WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-17\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"75\">It stands to reason that other high-paying avenues can serve as leverage for the players, while participation in offseason leagues could theoretically become a point of contention from the WNBA side depending on how much salaries are raised.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-18\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"78\">So, while Project B may not be direct competition for the WNBA at this juncture, Ogwumike signing has officially put the new women&#8217;s basketball league on the radar. <\/p>\n<p>Recommended Reading:<script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The WNBA CBA negotiations just got even more interesting.
