Following our previous look at an opening for a\u00a0Resilience Project Leader at SCAPE<\/a>, we are using this week\u2019s edition of our\u00a0Job Highlights series<\/a>\u00a0to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a\u00a0Resource Librarian at Gehry Partners<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The role, based in Los Angeles, calls for an individual to \u201cmanage the firm’s materials library and collaborate with design teams and vendors.\u201d Among the responsibilities for the role will be organizing and archiving material samples and maintaining an updated database of products for use by the firm, as well as researching new and innovative products and materials. Skills requested for the role include understanding architectural and design processes, materials, and finishes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The open role for a resource librarian at Gehry Partners offers us the opportunity to examine Gehry\u2019s projects through the lens of innovative material use. Gehry\u2019s playfulness with materials has been evident throughout his career, beginning with his early Santa Monica House<\/a> and its use of raw industrial materials such as corrugated metal, chain-link fencing, and plywood.<\/p>\n

At the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao<\/a>, Gehry used titanium panels chosen for their lightness, flexibility, and reflective quality. Similarly, in the Walt Disney Concert Hall<\/a>, Gehry used brushed stainless steel to create a crisp reflective surface to interact with Los Angeles\u2019 sharp sunlight.<\/p>\n

At the Fondation Louis Vuitton<\/a>, meanwhile, Gehry designed twelve large \u201csails\u201d of curved glass panels, described at the time as \u201ca cloud of glass. Recently, the architect also collaborated with Peter Marino<\/a> on a flagship for the luxury brand in Beverly Hills, repeating aspects of those in Gehry\u2019s original Fondation scheme.<\/p>\n
