The internet is becoming inundated with AI-generated wildlife clips, from bizarre interspecies playdates to animal trampoline sessions. While they might be adorable, these highly convincing faux animal videos are posing a danger to conservation efforts, per a study published in the journal Conservation Biology.<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cThey reflect characteristics, behaviors, habitats, or relationships between species that are not real,\u201d paper author Jos\u00e9 Guerrero, of the GESBIO group at the University of Cordoba in Spain, told Phys.org.<\/a><\/p>\n A coyote and a cat are seen palling around in one of the viral AI-generated clips. TikTok \/ @woang.lin<\/p>\n Researchers reportedly came to this conclusion by analyzing the plethora of AI-generated animal slop that\u2019s proliferating social media \u2014 of which there\u2019s quite a bit.<\/p>\n In one uber-viral clip, with hundreds of millions of views<\/a>, a gang of rabbits can be seen jumping on a trampoline in tandem. <\/p>\n Despite its hyperrealism, the static background and the fact that some of the bouncing bunnies disappear mid-hop are dead giveaways that the clip is fugazi.<\/p>\n Another popular genre is gangs of unlikely animals such as polar bears and cats<\/a> hanging out together \u2014 or even riding each other\u2019s backs \u2014 like a more exotic \u201cHomeward Bound movie.\u201d <\/p>\n Along with being just plain ridiculous, these anthropomorphized clips \u201cshow us animals with human behaviors that are far from reality,\u201d said Guerrero.<\/p>\n Raccoons hop on a trampoline in one of the fake videos. TikTok \/ @yagirlgabby_<\/p>\n \u201cFor example, we see predators and prey playing,\u201d he said. \u201cThe video of the child playing in the yard, the one featuring the leopard, undermines the conservation of a species like this, as you will never encounter it in that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n Study collaborator Roc\u00edo Serrano said that this disconnect between humans and animals is \u201cparticularly pronounced among\u00a0primary school children,\u201d which \u201cdemonstrates a lack of knowledge of local fauna\u201d among the youths.<\/p>\n \u201cThese videos create false connections with nature, as\u00a0vulnerable species\u00a0appear more abundant in these videos, and that is negative for conservation,\u201d the scientist added.<\/p>\n These videos can also create distorted expectations among children, who might go out into the countryside in the US or UK and expect to see a capybara or other non-native species that exhibits the \u201cmagical or charismatic\u201d traits in the videos.<\/p>\n When they can\u2019t find these critters at home, they might try and buy them, fueling the already damaging \u201cexotic pet trade,\u201d writes study author Tamara Murillo.<\/p>\n A popular genre of faux wildlife clips involves crews washing down whales like vehicles. \u201cThey reflect characteristics, behaviors, habitats, or relationships between species that are not real,\u201d said paper author Jos\u00e9 Guerrero, of the GESBIO group at the University of Cordoba in Spain.
