\n\tThe Fantastic Four: First Steps<\/a> is Michael Giacchino<\/a>\u2019s seventh score for Marvel<\/a>, including three Spider-Mans, Doctor Strange, Thor: Love and Thunder and Werewolf By Night, which he also directed.<\/p>\n

\n\tOr, is it his eighth? Giacchino said during a panel at Deadline\u2019s Sound & Screen: Film event that he essentially wrote two complete scores.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI actually wrote a whole other score for this film that you probably won\u2019t ever hear,\u201d Giacchino said. \u201cI just remember seeing it for the first time with the music and something didn\u2019t feel right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGiacchino wrote a lot of the initial score prior to principal photography. He joined the project when Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige asked him to compose music for the film\u2019s Comic-Con presentation. By the time they filmed, he had written the themes for Galactus and the Silver Surfer.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat was really fun was [director] Matt [Shakman] took that to the set,\u201d Giacchino said. \u201cIt was helpful to them to figure out oh, that\u2019s the movie we\u2019re making. This is the tone. It\u2019s so rare to do that. I think anyone who\u2019s making movies should hire the composer first and then have them write their suite because then they can all get on the same page on day 1.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tStill, First Steps evolved throughout production. So when Giacchino saw the final cut, he no longer felt his music was appropriate.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMusically, when I\u2019m writing, I like to start at the beginning and go through the end,\u201d he said. \u201cI had built this out based on one version of the movie. When I watched that music against the new version of the movie, I was like, \u2018Oh my God, this is not working for me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGiacchino hinted that this is also not the first time that has happened with one of his scores. Feige gave Giacchino one of the film\u2019s pickup days to rerecord.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou just never know,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat we do is a best guess. Everyone is taking their best guess at something and you\u2019re not always right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNext, Giacchino will direct his follow-up to Werewolf By Night, which he still touts.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf you haven\u2019t seen it, watch it. It\u2019s on Disney<\/a>+ if you still have that,\u201d joking about subscriber cancellations at the streamer in the wake of Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s brief suspension<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tDirecting was Giacchino\u2019s original goal.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs a composer, it\u2019s a very solitary thing,\u201d he said. \u201cI missed that interaction with a group of people. To me, movies are the greatest group art form there is. You get to work with every amazing artist known to man. I\u2019m going to be directing for Warner Bros. It\u2019s going to be really fun and I can\u2019t wait to tell you more about all that.\u201d<\/p>\n
