\n\tProject Hail Mary\u2019s<\/a> newly revealed footage was greeted with huge laughter during the Amazon MGM Studios<\/a> feature\u2019s San Diego Comic-Con<\/a> panel.<\/p>\n

\n\tRyan Gosling<\/a>, directors Phil Lord<\/a> and Christopher Miller<\/a>, author Andy Weir and screenwriter Drew Goddard debuted various clips from the first third of the sci-fi movie that hits theaters March 20, 2026. Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a middle school teacher who finds himself in outer space and tasked with saving humanity.<\/p>\n

\n\tEarly in the presentation, the film\u2019s team revealed its first five minutes. The footage opens with Gosling as he awakens on an apparent spaceship with a substantial beard and deals with robot assistants. The clip was met with laughter at various moments as Gosling wordlessly gets his bearings. Finally, he exclaims \u201cWhere am I?\u201d before staring out into a window overlooking outer space. <\/p>\n

\n\tFrom the stage, Gosling cracked that his character was wearing a \u201cplacenta onesie\u201d that he hopes to see Comic-Con attendees wearing as cosplay next year. <\/p>\n

\n\tLater, another sequence screened showed co-star Sandra H\u00fcller\u2019s character interacting with Gosling before his interstellar journey, as she pushes him to experiment on an alien cell, and more big laughs ensued. \u201cAm I expendable? Is that why you want me?\u201d asks a concerned Gosling in the footage. H\u00fcller replies, \u201cThats not the only reason.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile feeling the pressure of being watched by a team of scientists, Gosling\u2019s character says, \u201cIt took 200 years to figure out how bacteria work.\u201d But H\u00fcller remains unfazed: \u201cPlease do it faster.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA later, more dramatic scene shows Gosling grappling with zero-gravity during his journey through space and making a startling realization.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI connected to his reluctance,\u201d Gosling told the crowd. \u201cHe\u2019s quite an ordinary person.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe filmmakers said they were proud to finally get to work with the star. \u201cWe wanted to do something with Ryan for a long time,\u201d Miller said. \u201cThis was the most rewarding collaboration of our careers.\u201d Lord had a humorous way of assessing the film\u2019s message: \u201cIt answers the question, \u2018If the universe depends on it, can adult men make friends?’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe team noted that the movie found a way to blend humor with more emotional moments. \u201cAs people, our lives are dramatic and our lives are comedic every single day,\u201d said Goddard. And Miller concurred: \u201cThings are funnier if it comes from real emotion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWeir praised Gosling for bringing unexpected dimension to how the character was conceived on the page. \u201cSeeing Ryan give so many layers to this character I made up, I was like, \u2018Wow, this character is really cool,’\u201d the author joked.<\/p>\n

\n\tDiscussion turned to Rocky, the alien that Gosling meets on his journey, with Miller saying that team was convinced that viewers would still find ways to connect with the creature, even though it \u201cdoesn\u2019t have eyes or a mouth or a face.\u201d Miller added, \u201cYou would die for this character.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWeir quipped about how Rocky compared to other of Gosling\u2019s previous co-stars: \u201cFrom Emma Stone to person of stone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLord and Miller directed the film that hits theaters March 20, 2026.
