{"id":270357,"date":"2025-11-08T16:59:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T16:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/270357\/"},"modified":"2025-11-08T16:59:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T16:59:09","slug":"up-to-10-cm-of-snow-expected-sunday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/270357\/","title":{"rendered":"Up to 10 cm of snow expected Sunday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Climatologist at Environment Canada Dave Phillips says Toronto could see its first snowfall this week. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Toronto is bracing for its first snowfall of the season on Sunday as Environment Canada now warns of \u201cdifficult winter driving conditions\u201d and urges motorists to prepare for delays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">On Saturday, shortly before 5 a.m. the national weather agency issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.gc.ca\/en\/location\/index.html?coords=43.655,-79.383\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/weather.gc.ca\/en\/location\/index.html?coords=43.655,-79.383\">special weather statement<\/a>, forecasting between two and 10 centimetres of snow across the city beginning Sunday morning and continuing into the evening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cMotorists should expect difficult winter driving conditions and adjust travel plans accordingly. Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays,\u201d Environment Canada said. \u201cInstallation of winter tires should be considered prior to Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Snowfall amounts may change,\u2019 officials warn<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The agency says the storm\u2019s track and intensity are still uncertain, with the potential for snowfall amounts to change as the system develops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cConfidence remains low with respect to the strength and track of this weather system, and as such the areas affected and snowfall amounts may change,\u201d officials wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A low-pressure system moving through southern Ontario is expected to bring the first measurable snow of the season to parts of the region, marking Toronto\u2019s earliest significant accumulation in months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">CP24\u2019s meteorologist Bill Coulter previously warned drivers should expect slushy conditions rather than heavy buildup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThe wet snow will come down hard at times through the midday but melt on contact with roadways,\u201d Coulter said, noting that \u201cthe ground isn\u2019t frozen so it\u2019s not like your typical mid-winter storms.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>How is the city responding? <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The weather statement comes just one day after the city released details of its 2025\u201326 Winter Services Plan for people experiencing homelessness, announcing an expansion of shelter and housing capacity from Nov.15 through mid-April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The plan includes approximately 1,275 additional spaces across the shelter system, including 244 Warming Centre beds, 490 new shelter and respite spaces, and 175 surge beds activated during extreme cold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">City officials said some winter spaces will open early this weekend \u201cout of an abundance of caution\u201d due to the forecasted temperatures and expected snow on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In total, the city says they are currently accommodating nearly 9,000 people each night and emphasize that more than 3,800 people have moved from the shelter system into permanent housing so far this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Environment Canada is urging residents to continue monitoring forecasts and alerts as conditions evolve throughout the weekend. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">CP24 will have live coverage of Sunday\u2019s snowfall as it develops. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Climatologist at Environment Canada Dave Phillips says Toronto could see its first snowfall this week.
