{"id":272602,"date":"2025-11-09T18:41:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-09T18:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/272602\/"},"modified":"2025-11-09T18:41:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T18:41:08","slug":"longtime-nfl-commissioner-paul-tagliabue-dies-at-84","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/272602\/","title":{"rendered":"Longtime NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue dies at 84"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      New York<br \/>\n      AP<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhs0ojsp0000356ncgd2mlra@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Paul Tagliabue, who helped bring labor peace and riches to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/07\/sport\/football-nfl-week-10-preview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NFL<\/a> during his 17 years as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/31\/sport\/nfl-roger-goodell-speaks-after-attack-spt\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">commissioner<\/a> but was criticized for not taking stronger action on concussions, died Sunday from heart failure at 84 years old.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhs1fhnh000w356nof7v7x6g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said Tagliabue\u2019s family informed the league of his death in Chevy Chase, Maryland.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhs1fhnh000x356n5yy0gyrx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tagliabue, who had developed Parkinson\u2019s disease, was commissioner after Pete Rozelle from 1989 to 2006. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of a special centennial class in 2020. Current Commissioner Roger Goodell succeeded Tagliabue.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhs1fhnh000y356nlgop8p04@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPaul was the ultimate steward of the game \u2014 tall in stature, humble in presence and decisive in his loyalty to the NFL,\u201d Goodell said in a statement. \u201cI am forever grateful and proud to have Paul as my friend and mentor. I cherished the innumerable hours we spent together where he helped shape me as an executive but also as a man, husband and father.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhs1fhnh000z356noqdai4a6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tagliabue oversaw a myriad of new stadiums and negotiated television contracts that added billions of dollars to the league\u2019s bank account. Under him, there were no labor stoppages.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhs1fhnh0010356nwj61d5v9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During his time, Los Angeles lost two teams and Cleveland another, migrating to Baltimore before being replaced by an expansion franchise.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhs1fhnh0011356nhcty76id@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tagliabue implemented a policy on substance abuse that was considered the strongest in all major sports. He also established the \u201cRooney Rule,\u201d in which all teams with coaching vacancies must interview minority candidates. It has since been expanded to include front-office and league executive positions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhs1fhnh0012356np23y7uvx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When he took office in 1989, the NFL had just gotten its first Black head coach of the modern era. By the time Tagliabue stepped down in 2006, there were seven minority head coaches in the league.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhs1fhnh0013356ny9dfjxe8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tagliabue certainly had his detractors, notably over concussions. The issue has plagued the NFL for decades, though team owners had a major role in the lack of progress in dealing with head trauma.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhs1fhnh0014356njbvz5zpc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2017, Tagliabue apologized for remarks he made decades ago about concussions in football, acknowledging he didn\u2019t have the proper data at the time in 1994. He called concussions \u201cone of those pack-journalism issues\u201d and contended the number of concussions \u201cis relatively small; the problem is the journalist issue.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhs1fhnh0015356nv5ip9ekt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cObviously,\u201d he said on Talk of Fame Network, \u201cI do regret those remarks. Looking back, it was not sensible language to use to express my thoughts at the time. My language was intemperate, and it led to serious misunderstanding. I overreacted on issues which we were already working on. But that doesn\u2019t excuse the overreaction and intemperate language.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhs1fhni0016356nc5gjo5in@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBottom line, it sounded like I was shooting the messenger, which was the concussion issue. My intention at the time was to make a point which could have been made fairly simply: that there was a need for better data.
