{"id":272825,"date":"2025-11-09T21:14:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-09T21:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/272825\/"},"modified":"2025-11-09T21:14:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T21:14:07","slug":"mlb-pitchers-charged-with-taking-bribes-to-rig-pitches-for-bettors-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/272825\/","title":{"rendered":"MLB pitchers charged with taking bribes to rig pitches for bettors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz have been charged with taking bribes from sports bettors to intentionally throw certain types of pitches, including tossing balls instead of strikes to ensure successful bets.<\/p>\n<p>According to an indictment unsealed Sunday in federal court in Brooklyn, Clase and Ortiz helped bettors from their native Dominican Republic win in-game prop bets on pitch speed and outcome by throwing certain pitches slower and down in the dirt, well out of the strike zone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/emmanuel-clase-betting-mlb-865a77fcc796751678d421881449fc8a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Both pitchers<\/a> have been on <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/guardians-ortiz-06134e96597c96df1e76c5a96141de53\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">non-disciplinary paid leave<\/a> since July while Major League Baseball investigated what it said was unusually high in-game betting activity when they pitched.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz, 26, was arrested by the FBI on Sunday at Boston Logan International Airport. He is expected to appear in federal court in Boston on Monday. Clase, 27, is not yet in custody, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>A lawyer for Ortiz declined to comment when contacted by The Associated Press and a lawyer for Clase did not immediately return messages seeking comment.<\/p>\n<p>Clase and Ortiz are both charged with wire fraud conspiracy, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery and money laundering conspiracy. The top charges carry a potential punishment of up to 20 years in prison in the event of a conviction.<\/p>\n<p>The charges against Clase and Ortiz are the latest bombshell developments in a federal crackdown on betting in professional sports.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/billups-rozier-mlb-ncaa-sports-betting-scandals-fe51e2ae3b3ea33ef271c764e581a9ee\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Betting scandals<\/a> have long been a concern for professional sports leagues, but a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/f3fa1f71b8f44378a7e2c51d321b13b4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Supreme Court ruling<\/a> in May 2018 led to a wave of gambling incidents involving athletes and officials. The ruling struck down a federal law that barred sports betting in most states and opened the doors for online sportsbooks to take up a prominent space in the sports ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, more than 30 people, including prominent basketball figures such as Portland Trail Blazers head coach and Basketball Hall of Famer <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trail-blazers-chauncey-billups-57c920d0fcace5dbce25cd474468cd40\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chauncey Billups<\/a> and Miami Heat guard <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/terry-rozier\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Terry Rozier<\/a>, were arrested in a gambling sweep that rocked the NBA.<\/p>\n<p>Major League Baseball said it contacted federal law enforcement when it began investigating the unusual betting activity and \u201chas fully cooperated\u201d with authorities. \u201cWe are aware of the indictment and today\u2019s arrest, and our investigation is ongoing,\u201d its statement said.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the Guardians said: \u201cWe are aware of the recent law enforcement action, We will continue to fully cooperate with both law enforcement and Major League Baseball as their investigations continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>_____<\/p>\n<p>Associated Press reporters Eric Tucker in Washington, D.C., and Joe Reedy contributed to this report.<\/p>\n<p>Michael R.
