Esch\u00ader<\/a>\u2019s work has adorned the cov\u00aders of albums like Mott the Hoople\u2019s 1969 debut<\/a> and the spec\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtive fic\u00adtion of Ita\u00adlo Calvi\u00adno and Jorge Luis Borges<\/a>. A big hit with hip\u00adpies and 1960s col\u00adlege stu\u00addents, writes Heavy Music Art\u00adwork, his mind-bend\u00ading prints became asso\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded with \u201cques\u00adtion\u00ading accept\u00aded views of nor\u00admal expe\u00adri\u00adence and test\u00ading the lim\u00adits of per\u00adcep\u00adtion with hal\u00adlu\u00adcino\u00adgenic drugs.\u201d While he appre\u00adci\u00adat\u00aded his cult fol\u00adlow\u00ading, Esch\u00ader \u201cdid not encour\u00adage their mys\u00adti\u00adcal inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adtions of his images.\u201d Reply\u00ading to one enthu\u00adsi\u00adas\u00adtic fan of his print Rep\u00adtiles<\/a>, who claimed to see in it an image of rein\u00adcar\u00adna\u00adtion, Esch\u00ader replied, \u201cMadame, if that\u2019s the way you see it, so be it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rather than illus\u00adtrate high\u00ader states of con\u00adscious\u00adness or meta\u00adphys\u00adi\u00adcal enti\u00adties, Bruno Ernst writes in The Mag\u00adic Mir\u00adror of M.C. Esch\u00ader<\/a>, the artist intend\u00aded to cre\u00adate prac\u00adti\u00adcal, \u201cpic\u00adto\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtion of intel\u00adlec\u00adtu\u00adal under\u00adstand\u00ading.\u201d Illus\u00adtra\u00adtions, that is, of philo\u00adsoph\u00adi\u00adcal and sci\u00aden\u00adtif\u00adic thought exper\u00adi\u00adments. The son of a civ\u00adil engi\u00adneer, Esch\u00ader began his stud\u00adies in archi\u00adtec\u00adture before mov\u00ading to draw\u00ading and print\u00admak\u00ading.<\/p>\n

The chal\u00adlenge of cre\u00adat\u00ading built environments\u2014even seem\u00ading\u00adly impos\u00adsi\u00adble ones\u2014always seemed to occu\u00adpy his mind. Along with themes from the nat\u00adur\u00adal world, a high per\u00adcent\u00adage of his works cen\u00adter on buildings\u2014inspired by for\u00adma\u00adtive ear\u00adly years in Rome and his admi\u00adra\u00adtion for Islam\u00adic art and Span\u00adish archi\u00adtec\u00adture.<\/p>\n

In the 50s and 60s Escher\u2019s art piqued the inter\u00adest of aca\u00add\u00ade\u00admics and math\u00ade\u00admati\u00adcians, an audi\u00adence he found more con\u00adge\u00adnial to his vision. He cor\u00adre\u00adspond\u00aded with sci\u00aden\u00adtists and incor\u00adpo\u00adrat\u00aded their ideas into his work, mean\u00adwhile claim\u00ading to be \u201cabsolute\u00adly inno\u00adcent of train\u00ading or knowl\u00adedge in the exact sci\u00adences.\u201d In the 50s, Esch\u00ader \u201cdaz\u00adzled\u201d the likes of math\u00ade\u00admati\u00adcians like Roger Pen\u00adrose and HSM Cox\u00adeter. In turn, notes Maev Kennedy<\/a>, he \u201cwas inspired by\u00a0Penrose\u2019s per\u00adspec\u00adti\u00adval tri\u00adan\u00adgle<\/a>\u00a0and Coxeter\u2019s work on crys\u00adtal sym\u00adme\u00adtry.\u201d<\/p>\n

For all the excite\u00adment he cre\u00adat\u00aded among math\u00ade\u00admati\u00adcians, it took a bit longer for Esch\u00ader to get noticed in the art world. When Penrose\u2019s uncle showed Escher\u2019s ver\u00adsion of the per\u00adspec\u00adti\u00adval tri\u00adan\u00adgle to Picas\u00adso, \u201cPicas\u00adso had heard of the British math\u00ade\u00admati\u00adcian but not of the Dutch artist.\u201d Escher\u2019s fame spread out\u00adside of the sci\u00adences in part through the inter\u00adests of the coun\u00adter\u00adcul\u00adture. He may have shrugged off mys\u00adti\u00adcal and psy\u00adche\u00addel\u00adic read\u00adings of his prints, but he had an innate pen\u00adchant for the mar\u00advelous\u00adly weird (see his copy of a scene, for exam\u00adple, from Hierony\u00admus Bosch, above, or his sur\u00adre\u00adal print Grav\u00adi\u00adty, below).<\/p>\n

Whether\u2014as Har\u00advard Library cura\u00adtor John Over\u00adholt confesses\u2014you\u2019re a \u201cnerd who loves M.C. Esch\u00ader\u201d for his math\u00ade\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal mind, an artist with a mys\u00adti\u00adcal bent who loves him for his hal\u00adlu\u00adci\u00adna\u00adto\u00adry qual\u00adi\u00adties, or some mea\u00adsure of both, you\u2019ll find exact\u00adly the Esch\u00ader you\u2019re look\u00ading for in this dig\u00adi\u00adtal gallery.<\/a><\/p>\n
