DETROIT – A local radio staple is about to sign off for the final time following a 50 year career in broadcast radio.<\/p>\n
iHeartMedia Detroit<\/a> just announced that Doug \u201cDoc of Rock\u201d Podell, who is currently on 106.7 WLLZ Detroit Wheels<\/a>, will sign off for the last time on Friday, December 5.<\/p>\n Until then, Podell will continue to host his weekday afternoon drive show from 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. through his final show.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s been an incredible ride,\u201d said Doug Podell. \u201cFrom my earliest days at WABX to returning to WLLZ, where I first took on a leadership role, it feels like the perfect place to sign off. I\u2019ve been lucky to spend 50 years doing what I love, in the city I love, surrounded by listeners who made it all worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n Podell first hit the radio airwaves back in 1975 at 99.5 WABX. He then moved to 106.7 WWWW, and later to 92.5 KQRS in Minneapolis before joining 98.7 WLLZ in the 1980s.<\/p>\n He then went to 98.5 WNCX in Cleveland before returning to Detroit radio at 101.1 WRIF in 1995. Following that he became a familiar voice on 94.7 WCSX from 2009 -2017 before going to 93.1 WDRQ.<\/p>\n \u201cDoug Podell is a Detroit original,\u201d said Casey Krukowski, Program Director for iHeartMedia Detroit\u2019s 106.7 WLLZ. \u201cHis passion for music, deep connection with listeners, and commitment to radio excellence have left a lasting mark\u2014not only on this station, but on generations of Detroit rock fans. We are honored that he chose to conclude his legendary run right here at WLLZ.\u201d<\/p>\n Podell has received many broadcast honors over the years, including Program Director of the Year from Billboard.
