Researchers are aiming to find out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Climate scientists know that carbon trapped in permafrost is a huge potential contributor to global warming once the frozen soil thaws. Arctic permafrost contains the largest terrestrial pool of organic carbon on the planet, exceeding the carbon already circulating in Earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>As Arctic regions warm \u2014 and the melting ice and thawing soil decompose to release vast amounts of carbon and methane \u2014 there\u2019s no telling how much that will accelerate climate change, says biogeochemist <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.ualberta.ca\/directory\/person\/stank?_gl=1*1ibm99r*_gcl_au*MjU3Njc3MjY0LjE3NTY4MzM4NzI.*_ga*MTY5NDcxODYxMy4xNzAwMjUzMzE0*_ga_21TWH2P5G7*czE3NjA1NjQ1Mjckbzk3MCRnMSR0MTc2MDU2NDg2OCRqNTckbDAkaDY2NjYzNDI0OQ..\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Suzanne Tank<\/a>, an expert in the cycling of various elements underpinning all life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven a partial mobilization of permafrost carbon may propel our current atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations into heights unknown in recent Earth history,\u201d she writes, along with environmental soil scientist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/en\/renewable-resources\/research\/environmental-soil-science\/david-olefeldt.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Olefeldt<\/a> and permafrost expert <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.ualberta.ca\/directory\/person\/duane?_gl=1*n8gkr*_gcl_au*MjU3Njc3MjY0LjE3NTY4MzM4NzI.*_ga*MTY5NDcxODYxMy4xNzAwMjUzMzE0*_ga_21TWH2P5G7*czE3NjA1NjQ1Mjckbzk3MCRnMSR0MTc2MDU2NDgyOSRqOSRsMCRoNjY2NjM0MjQ5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Duane Froese<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t now have a great sense of the degree to which permafrost thaw is contributing to the accelerated accumulation of CO2,\u201d says Tank. \u201cIt\u2019s not accounted for in the frameworks of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)<\/a>, so it\u2019s something we argue we need to quantify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The three University of Alberta researchers have received $1 million from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schmidtsciences.org\/vicc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Schmidt Sciences<\/a> to lead the Canadian arm of a $45-million international partnership to advance our understanding of how the global carbon cycle drives climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all need to work together to answer these questions over broad scales and different landscape types,\u201d says Tank.<\/p>\n<p>Tank and Froese, both in the U of A\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/en\/science\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Science<\/a>, and Olefeldt of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/en\/agriculture-life-environment-sciences\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Faculty of Life, Agricultural &amp; Environmental Sciences (ALES)<\/a> will collaborate with researchers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwtgeoscience.ca\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Northwest Territories Geological Survey<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/nwtresearch.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aurora Research Institute<\/a>, along with partners at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and in Europe. The Canadian fieldwork will focus on permafrost landscapes in and around the Mackenzie Delta, the central Mackenzie Valley, Fort Simpson, Norman Wells and Yellowknife, drawing partly on data the three have together collected over decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to lead the on-the-ground work in Canada, based on our long place-based relationships,\u201d says Tank, adding that her own research focuses on the current and future functioning of the land-freshwater-ocean continuum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think about climate change, permafrost, carbon cycling and nutrient dynamics, and how these processes act and interact in freshwaters and connected systems from the Canadian Arctic to the Pacific Coast,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Froese\u2019s group looks at the development and understanding of past records of environmental change, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/en\/folio\/2025\/08\/video-race-to-preserve-precious-evidence-in-permafrost.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">particular interest in permafrost<\/a> and its responses to climate change today and in the past. He is also director of the U of A\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/ualberta.ca\/pacslab\/home\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Permafrost Archives Science Laboratory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Olefeldt studies the catchment carbon cycling in boreal to Arctic landscapes, with a focus on the role of wetlands, which are sensitive to disturbances like permafrost thaw. He also leads the <a href=\"https:\/\/caws.ualberta.ca\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Catchment and Wetland Sciences Research Group<\/a> in ALES.<\/p>\n<p>Four teams of international university researchers, including the U of A\u2019s, will collect high-resolution data needed to generate climate forecasts with the help of AI and machine learning.
