Sydney Sweeney proved she can take a hit \u2014 from the box office.<\/p>\n

The star of \u201cChristy,\u201d the new biopic about boxer Christy Martin<\/a>, defended her struggling film after a notably low first weekend theatrical gross of $1.3 million across more than 2,000 screens.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am so deeply proud of this movie,\u201d the 28-year-old \u201cEuphoria\u201d star wrote in an Instagram post<\/a>. \u201cProud of the film [director] david [Mich\u00f4d] made. proud of the story we told.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sweeney added: \u201cSo yes I\u2019m proud. why? because we don\u2019t always make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

The drama tells the harrowing life story of Christy Salters, whose married name was Martin \u2014 a trailblazing fighter nicknamed \u201cThe Coal Miner\u2019s Daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Post awarded \u201cChristy\u201d three stars<\/a> after its Toronto International Film Festival world premiere in September and called Sweeney\u2019s performance \u201ca knockout.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

And ticket-buyers who made the trek last weekend also approved. It currently holds a 98% audience score on RottenTomatoes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But there weren\u2019t enough of them to save it. \u201cChristy\u201d\u2019s box office flameout makes the movie the latest flop in a rocky year on the big screen for Sweeney.<\/p>\n

Her crime comedy \u201cAmericana<\/a>\u201d grossed less than $500,000 off a $9 million budget. And Ron Howard\u2019s $35-million \u201cEden<\/a>\u201d did just $2.5 million in business.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Those lows come after two years of major highs \u2014 2023 and 2024, when her \u201cAnyone But You,\u201d which co-starred Glen Powell, grossed $220 million, and religious horror flick \u201cImmaculate\u201d grossed $35 million.<\/p>\n

A dispiriting trend of late, however, is that adult-skewing films with pricey A-List stars have flatlined in theaters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Smashing Machine\u201d starring Dwayne \u201cThe Rock\u201d Johnson, \u201cThe Kiss of the Spider Woman\u201d starring Jennifer Lopez and \u201cSpringsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere\u201d with Jeremy Allen White have all struggled to gain a foothold with paying audiences.<\/p>\n
