{"id":2756,"date":"2025-07-17T12:28:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-17T12:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/2756\/"},"modified":"2025-07-17T12:28:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-17T12:28:11","slug":"canadas-defence-spending-will-lift-economy-but-wont-stop-recession-report-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/2756\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada\u2019s defence spending will lift economy but won\u2019t stop recession: report &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ottawa\u2019s ramped up <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/defence-spending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">defence-spending<\/a> plans will give the economy a lift, but not enough to save it from a <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/recession\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">recession<\/a>, a newly released report forecasts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1752731349_272_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The updated analysis from Oxford Economics published Wednesday projects that Canada\u2019s defence spending commitments will raise the country\u2019s real gross domestic product by a tenth of a percentage point this year and next.<\/p>\n<p>That would bring growth up to 0.9 per cent annually this year and 0.4 per cent in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Mark Carney announced plans last month to reach NATO\u2019s defence and security spending target of two per cent of GDP by the end of this year. New member commitments from last month\u2019s NATO summit will see that funding ramp up to five per cent of GDP by 2035.<\/p>\n<p>Oxford Economics assumes that the accelerated defence spending will be financed by a larger deficit from the federal government; the latest forecasts were prepared before Ottawa announced a plan last week to trim operations spending by 15 per cent in the next three years.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The federal government is planning to publish its 2025 budget in the fall after forgoing the traditional spring fiscal update.<\/p>\n<p>Without associated savings, the higher defence spending would mean a permanently higher debt-to-GDP ratio for the federal government, the report argued.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-video__image\" alt=\"Click to play video: 'Will we see a recession? But young people are already living a \u2018youth-cession\u2019\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The defence-driven bump in real GDP also won\u2019t be enough to lift Canada out of the \u201ctrade war-induced recession\u201d that\u2019s already underway, Oxford Economics said in the report.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1752731349_312_national.jpg\" alt=\"For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n<p>For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n<p>The firm expects the economy shrank last quarter and that the current recession will last through to the end of the year for a total decline of 0.8 per cent in real GDP before the contraction is over.<\/p>\n<p>While the labour market has held up relatively well so far amid Canada\u2019s tariff dispute with the United States \u2014 the economy added roughly 83,000 jobs last month, surprising most economists \u2014 Oxford Economics thinks the resilience will be short-lived.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cU.S. trade policy uncertainty and new tariffs will continue prompting firms to postpone or cancel investment plans, cut production, curb hiring and increasingly lay off workers,\u201d the report read.<\/p>\n<p>The firm projects 140,000 job losses to come in the recession as impacts broaden past tariff-related sectors.
