Is Islam Makhachev<\/a> a win or two away from retiring from mixed martial arts? The last man to share the octagon with him seems to think so.<\/p>\n

Renato Moicano<\/a> jumped on the opportunity on 24 hours\u2019 notice to face Makhachev for the lightweight title when his original challenger Arman Tsarukyan<\/a> withdrew from UFC 311<\/a> due to health issues back in January, and he argues the Russian star is close to retirement now that he\u2019s left the division.<\/p>\n

Makhachev moves up to welterweight to compete against 170-pound champion Jack Della Maddalena<\/a> on Nov. 15, which headlines UFC 322 at Madison Square Garden. With Makhachev seeking a second UFC belt after relinquishing his lightweight title, Moicano believes his former opponent could end up leaving the sport in 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s suppose he beats Jack Della Maddalena. He\u2019s going to look for someone that\u2019s more favorable and see if the UFC does that. If not, bye,\u201d Moicano told MMA Fighting. \u201cAnd if he wins one more, also bye. And he\u2019s right, can\u2019t stay too much longer. It\u2019s like I say \u2014 I did a video about Jose Aldo<\/a> and got a lot of hate. \u2018Oh, you\u2019re talking about Jose Aldo\u2019s legacy.\u2019 As a fan, I didn\u2019t like that he came back. He could have ended his career a better way.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Moicano, the former UFC and WEC featherweight champion should have called it a career when he returned from retirement to beat Jonathan Martinez<\/a> in Rio de Janeiro. Instead, Aldo lost back-to-back decisions to Mario Bautista<\/a> and Aiemann Zahabi<\/a>, match-ups that \u201cprime Aldo\u201d would have won.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople were like, \u2018How about you, losing fights and continue fighting?\u2019\u201d Moicano continued. \u201cBut I\u2019m not Jose Aldo, I\u2019m not Islam Makhachev, I\u2019m Renato Moicano. I\u2019m fighting [for money]. I\u2019ll be like Tony Ferguson<\/a>, seven losses in a row [laughs]. Now, if you have a big legacy, if you\u2019re undefeated, brother, win the belt and walk away because if you continue fighting, you\u2019ll lose. Do like Khabib [Nurmagomedov], take the belt and let people say whatever they want. Brother, go live the rest of your life as an undefeated champion. That\u2019s what I think.<\/p>\n

\u201cIslam Makhachev, even though he lost to Adriano Martins<\/a> \u2014 so he will never be compared to Khabib because of that \u2014, he\u2019s a protege of Khabib. But if he goes up and wins the 170 belt, you better retire, brother.
