{"id":277920,"date":"2025-11-12T06:29:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T06:29:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/277920\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T06:29:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T06:29:13","slug":"everybodys-gone-canadians-mark-remembrance-day-as-number-of-veterans-dwindle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/277920\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Everybody\u2019s gone\u2019: Canadians mark Remembrance Day as number of veterans dwindle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Eight decades after the end of the deadliest military conflict in history, Canadians paused for <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/remembrance-day\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Remembrance Day<\/a> ceremonies Tuesday to honour those who put their lives on the line for their country.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1762614923_240_70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In chilly Ottawa, next to a National War Memorial lightly dusted with snow, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/second-world-war\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Second World War<\/a> veteran John Preece, 99, said he still remembers trudging through the muck in poor weather during the war.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was muddy and cold and raining and snowing,\u201d he said. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t very nice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Preece, who served as a private, was wounded when a sniper bullet struck his arm as he was operating a Bren light machine-gun in Holland in April 1945.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tSecond World War veteran John Preece, 99, sits with his wife during a Remembrance Day ceremony in Ottawa on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2025.\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tSean Kilpatrick\/ The Canadian Press\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>He is one of just a few thousand still-living Canadian veterans from that pivotal war. He said he does not personally know any other living veterans of that conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I go to the old regiment in Toronto to visit, there\u2019s nobody. I\u2019ve never served, I couldn\u2019t imagine what it would be like,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In a rare turn of events, Gov. Gen.
