Last weekend, the Saskatchewan Roughriders edged out the BC Lions 24-21, while the Montreal Alouettes held on for a 19-16 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, setting the stage for the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Roughriders last won the Grey Cup in 2013, while the Alouettes most recently hoisted The Cup in 2023. Saskatchewan head coach Corey Mace, who has been a part of three Grey Cup championship teams, has pressed all the right buttons up this point, while Montreal headman Jason Maas is no stranger to the big stage, having been part of four Grey Cup champion squads.

The main storyline entering the Sunday contest revolves around Montreal dual-threat quarterback Davis Alexander, who remains undefeated as a starter in his young career winning 13 consecutive starts, including the postseason. However, he suffered a strained hamstring last week, which could relegate him to operating out of the pocket more. While Maas has stated that Alexander will give it a go, backup McCleod Bethel-Thompson will be on standby, if needed.

For Saskatchewan, their signal-caller Trevor Harris knows how to work the short-to-intermediate parts of the field. He has been very efficient in the postseason, while running back AJ Ouellette will look to have another full workload in the ground game.

Some X-factors who could impact the game include Montreal standout defensive lineman Darnell Sankey who has been lights out and Saskatchewan cornerback Tevaughn Campbell, who spent four seasons in the NFL as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Lastly, Roughriders returner Mario Alford is one of the most dangerous returners on the planet, having brought back seven punts and four kickoffs for a touchdown during his career.

This is sure to be a highly competitive matchup, which could wind up leading to more CFL playoffs late-game heroics. One year removed from guiding the Toronto Argonauts to their second Grey Cup Championship in four years, Ryan Dinwiddie has departed his post as the Argos head coach to become the general manager and head coach of the Ottawa Redblacks. The 2023 CFL Coach of the Year brings proven experience and leadership to an organization that has had just one winning season in the past seven years. Dinwiddie went undrafted as a quarterback out of Boise State in the 2004 NFL Draft, spending two seasons with the Chicago Bears and Hamburg Sea Devils of NFL Europe. He would later go on to play six seasons in the CFL before becoming an assistant coach, winning a Grey Cup as the Calgary Stampeders quarterback coach. Dinwiddie would quickly rise to the rank of head coach with Toronto in 2020, where he emerged as one of the top head coaches in the CFL.

His new contract with Ottawa runs through the 2028 season. In a corresponding move, the Redblacks announced that Shawn Burke has signed an extension to remain with the organization as its vice president of football operations, also through the 2028 season. This is the first major front office transaction in what many believe will be a frantic CFL offseason.

BE SURE TO SUBSCRIBE TO THE ALL ACCESS FOOTBALL YOUTUBE CHANNEL

The United Football League has made several announcements over the past few weeks. Most recently, the UFL released a statement on the current state of flux involving the current league rosters stating, “As the league finalizes the reorganization of its football operations, all team rosters will remain unchanged.” This means that the UFL will not be changing any of the eight team rosters, with the players who have already re-signed to teams. Now, they do have three franchises who were relocated this offseason, so figuring out the logistics on which former teams will be transferred to the new markets is still to be determined.

In news that came down the wire late last week, the UFL has made a significant change in how they operate player personnel, as the league laid off all eight of their general managers, as they shift towards a centralized scouting structure. Moving forward, UFL football operations will be spearheaded by Doug Whaley and Russ Giglio, according to this report from PFN. They will work directly with teams to approve and facilitate player signings, while reporting to UFL CEO Russ Brandon. One positive development that has emerged from this decision is the elevation of head coaches from seasonal employees to full-time employees, meaning head coaches will now be paid for a full 12 months (previously they were employed six months of the year). That would indicate that head coaches will have more personnel control of the roster with guidance from the UFL central headquarters. According to our estimations, by slashing all eight of the general managers, the league could save nearly $1M in total salaries. This is just the latest development surrounding the arrival of new UFL investment owner Mike Repole, as the league explores options to get skinny on their bottom line. The GMs let go include Von Hutchins (DC Defenders), Rick Mueller (Houston Renegades), Paul Roell (Birmingham Stallions), Dave Boller (St. Louis Battlehawks), Will Lewis (Houston Gamblers), Steve Kazor (formerly Michigan Panthers), Jim Monos (formerly Memphis Showboats) and Marc Lillibridge (formerly San Antonio Brahmas).

EDITOR’S NOTE: This story originally appeared on Inside The League, be sure to subscribe to the Friday Wrap (Free), featuring ‘The Business of Football Report.’ Signup here and stay connected on the latest behind the scenes transgressions in the agent and scouting community. REGISTER HERE.

This week in QB Huddle, hosts Tim Smith, Lo Morales and Brandon Noohi break the huddle to discuss the new top gun in the AFC.
