{"id":279527,"date":"2025-11-13T03:05:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T03:05:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/279527\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T03:05:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T03:05:09","slug":"back-in-los-angeles-but-theatrical-biz-concerns-loom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/279527\/","title":{"rendered":"Back In Los Angeles, But Theatrical Biz Concerns Loom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/american-film-market\/\" id=\"auto-tag_american-film-market\" data-tag=\"american-film-market\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">American Film Market<\/a>\u2018s return to Los Angeles is being cheered by the independent distribution community. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe six-day event, headquartered for the first time <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/01\/afm-returning-los-angeles-2025-edition-las-vegas-1236271918\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1236271918\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at the Fairmont Century Plaza<\/a>, got underway Monday after a misstep edition in Las Vegas and years in Santa Monica.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe majority of industry we\u2019ve spoke to this week have been enthused about the new venue, which is in close proximity to the agencies and Hollywood, and offers a more upscale business environs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s very nice and civilized,\u201d one seller told us. \u201cThis is definitely better than Las Vegas or the Loews [in Santa Monica],\u201d another noted. A European buyer added: \u201cWe like this venue and it\u2019s much better for off-site meetings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAs we know, it\u2019s not possible to please everyone all the time. One buyer lamented: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/afm\/\" id=\"auto-tag_afm\" data-tag=\"afm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AFM<\/a> just doesn\u2019t work. With companies like FilmNation, Black Bear, A24, 193, Capstone, etc., not at the venue we have to spend half our day in Ubers. The rooms at the Fairmont remain expensive [we hear prices are pretty much equivalent to the Loews, and those were always deemed too pricey] and small.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe exhibitor number is reported to be 285 this year. Pre-pandemic, the event was attracting 375-450 exhibitors. When it went virtual in 2020, the market saw a record 562. This year\u2019s 285 is consistent with last year in Vegas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDespite exhibitor numbers falling from pre-pandemic levels, the overwhelming sentiment remains that people enjoy meeting in person. The venue contract is expected to extend beyond 2026, organizers IFTA tell us. However, next year the event will also have to compete with a retooled and turbocharged <a data-id=\"1236288541\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/02\/toronto-film-festival-content-market-takes-shape-industry-figures-join-1236288541\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto market<\/a>, which could prove a headache for organizers.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-deadline-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/20251111_103511.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"369\" width=\"1024\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAnthony D\u2019Alessandro\/Deadline<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tComing into the event there were some fears that disruption to U.S. air travel may have a knock-on effect for AFM. We\u2019ve heard from a couple of people who decided against traveling for fear of getting stuck in long delays, but otherwise the event doesn\u2019t seem to have been significantly impacted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cWe haven\u2019t had any cancellations,\u201d one seller told us. \u201cI had a full day of meetings on day one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tMel Gibson\u2019s <a data-id=\"1236592967\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/10\/mel-gibson-resurrection-christ-big-budget-angels-demons-1236592967\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Resurrection of Christ is the big-ticket item<\/a> at the market, with a budget for the two parts said to be in the $200 million range. Lionsgate had a buyers presentation Monday, but intel is limited due to them having signed NDAs. One buyer simply said to us: \u201cVerrrrrry good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAmong new-to-market buzzy pre-sale packages are the Benicio Del Toro-Cameron Diaz crime-drama <a data-id=\"1236603978\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/10\/benicio-del-toro-cameron-diaz-reenactment-film-1236603978\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reenactment<\/a>; the Daisy Edgar-Jones title <a data-id=\"1236604481\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/10\/daisy-edgar-jones-emilia-jones-bad-bridgets-luckychap-1236604481\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bad Bridgets<\/a>; and starry Jessica Chastain-Chris Pine drama <a data-id=\"1236609311\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/11\/jessica-chastain-chris-pine-charles-melton-darling-california-1236609311\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">My Darling California<\/a>. Projects like Gerard Butler hostage pic <a data-id=\"1236608949\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/11\/hayley-atwell-joins-gerard-butler-hostage-movie-empire-city-1236608949\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Empire City<\/a> and Black Bear\u2019s <a data-id=\"1236603244\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/10\/taron-egerton-joins-channing-tatum-in-crime-film-kockroach-1236603244\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kockroach<\/a> have added cast. There are also a handful of horror titles that are sure to generate heat. The buzziest of all indie projects announced this week is <a data-id=\"1236614051\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/11\/tom-ford-cry-to-heaven-adele-nicholas-hoult-1236614051\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Tom Ford movie<\/a> we just revealed on Deadline. But that isn\u2019t with a seller so isn\u2019t at the AFM and will likely end up with a studio once the dust settles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cIt has all the ingredients to be a good market,\u201d one established international seller told us. \u201cLet\u2019s see if buying appetite matches the industry\u2019s ambition. I feel there are a better caliber of projects this year and more realistic projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tWith that suggestion in mind, we went back to look at the \u201chot lists\u201d from the last two editions of AFM. The level of project may be a tad higher this edition, but there\u2019s not much in it. What\u2019s striking is the low hit rate. Many projects haven\u2019t been made or fell away, some are still to come, a few failed to take off at the box office, and a few turned into festival hits or good earners. The European Film Market in Berlin last year had a stronger lineup on paper but dealmaking was sluggish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe arrival of new domestic buyers such as <a data-id=\"1236461722\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/07\/black-bear-us-theatrical-distribution-caa-agent-ben-kramer-1236461722\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Black Bear<\/a> and <a data-id=\"1236513293\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/09\/gus-van-sant-dead-mans-wire-row-k-us-deal-1236513293\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Row K<\/a> is certainly seen as a welcome development. The word on the street has been that more U.S. buyers are coming including a long-expected return to theatrical distribution for David Glasser. Screen reports today that FilmNation has set up a deal to handle sales for 101 Studios\u2019 distribution titles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tBut the <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/10\/box-office-bombs-springsteen-smashing-machine-1236598171\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1236598171\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">poor theatrical performances of buzzed-about adult-oriented fare<\/a> such as the expensive The Smashing Machine and Sydney Sweeney starrer Christy are also a sign of how challenging the market can be.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-deadline-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.jpg\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/20251111_103822.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"369\" width=\"1024\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAnthony D\u2019Alessandro\/Deadline<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cThere is a fair amount of projects,\u201d one veteran international buyer explained. \u201cBut there is a clear absence of big independent propositions. Production budgets are out of control and not supported by the market. There are a host of $10M-15M movies which has proved to be a difficult category to pre-buy. Looking at the recent domestic results of independent films we are looking for a needle in a haystack. Films like Christy and Smashing Machine both got decent reviews, good theatrical launches, and had strong artistic elements to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tMeanwhile, the streamers and studios dip their toes into the indie market less frequently. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOne of the consistent hurdles for indie theatrical distributors both at films festivals like Toronto and Sundance, and a market like AFM here, is that if you\u2019re without a pay-one deal\/streaming partner, it\u2019s hard to close. Those partners still out there for indie movies include Hulu, HBO Max and Starz, but unlike previous years the amount they\u2019re willing to shell out for a title has been capped. That said, there are plenty of theatrical distributors already armed with an SVOD deal, e.g., Sony Pictures Classics (Netflix), Searchlight (Hulu), Focus Features (Peacock), Neon (Hulu) and A24 (HBO Max), putting them in a feasible position to make a go at a feature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tOne leading seller told us: \u201cThe studios have been AWOL for long time with the exception of the specialty divisions. Netflix have tangibly slowed down in the last year. Amazon remains active.
