As China\u2019s youth continue to struggle to find jobs suited to their skills and background, some enterprising hopefuls are making use of an unorthodox channel to unearth new opportunities: the country\u2019s sprawling trade fairs and expos.<\/p>\n
Discouraged by the limited openings<\/a> at both domestic and foreign firms, many jobseekers view these events \u2013 often the largest of their kind \u2013 as chances to network, explore new industries and even pick up temporary positions as expo employees.<\/p>\n \u201cI go to these expos to explore and broaden my view of what\u2019s out there, then I go through these companies\u2019 websites to send out job applications,\u201d said An Ran, who earned her bachelor\u2019s degree in English in 2024. She was recently laid off by her first employer, a small foreign trade firm.<\/p>\n \u201cThe employment environment is horrible,\u201d she added. \u201cMany of the smaller companies are just screening young people, not really training them.\u201d<\/p>\n Her complaints are a familiar refrain for the millions of young Chinese on the hunt for stable work. Their unemployment rate \u2013 consistently landing in double digits since 2019 \u2013 poses a headache for Beijing as it works to keep economic growth steady and restore public confidence.<\/p>\n The urban jobless rate among those aged 16 to 24 eased slightly to 17.7 per cent<\/a> in September after climbing to 18.9 per cent in August.
