The main entrance to Mississauga Hospital will be temporarily closed to both pedestrians and vehicles starting on Friday as construction continues on what\u2019s expected to be the largest hospital in Canada when it opens eight years from now.<\/p>\n

From Nov. 14-21, there will be no access to the hospital\u2019s main entrance for either walk-in or vehicle traffic, hospital officials said in an email update on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The main entrance will reopen to pedestrians after the week-long closure, but will remain closed to vehicles through early January.<\/p>\n

During all closures, people are advised to use the facility\u2019s lower entrance to access the hospital, which is located at the corner of The Queensway and Hurontario Street several blocks north of the QEW.<\/p>\n

\u201cDrivers are asked to allow extra time as there may be delays and congestion, follow posted signage and speed limits, and stay alert in active construction zones,\u201d hospital officials said, adding staff will also be available to help direct people on site.<\/p>\n

Officials with Trillium Health Partners, the organization that oversees Mississauga and Credit Valley hospitals in addition to the Queensway Health Centre on the Mississauga-Etobicoke border, said the temporary main entrance closures are needed as work progresses on The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital<\/a> and Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 200,000-sq.-ft. Shah Family Hospital will be located within the larger hospital, which will be 2.8 million square feet in size and 22 storeys in height when it opens to patients in 2033. The family hospital will become Ontario\u2019s first health-care centre to focus exclusively on the well-being of women and children, hospital officials said earlier.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Construction began on the massive new health-care centre in June<\/a> and it\u2019s being built on the same site as the current Mississauga Hospital, which first opened at that location in 1958.<\/p>\n

The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital carries an estimated price tag of $16 billion.<\/p>\n

Among other things, the new hospital:<\/p>\n

Will, through its construction, create some 3,000 construction jobs and contribute about $1 billion to the local economy over the next 10 years.
\nWill be the largest community-based teaching hospital in Canada at 2.8 million square feet and with 950 beds and 23 operating rooms.
\nWill see an anticipated 1.7 million patient visits annually.
\nWill add 2,400 health-care support staff and some 400 doctors to its ranks.<\/p>\n
