The Ontario government says it\u2019s investing $180,000 to help deliver the first-ever Northern Super League (NSL) Championship, marking a milestone moment for women\u2019s professional soccer in Canada.<\/p>\n
The inaugural NSL Final will take place on Saturday, November 15 at BMO Field in Toronto, where more than 20,000 fans are expected to attend, generating an estimated $12 million in economic activity.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith the emergence of organizations like the Northern Super League, we are witnessing a new era of women\u2019s sports in Canada and our government is proud to support its growth,\u201d said Neil Lumsden, Ontario\u2019s Minister of Sport. \u201cIt\u2019s driving economic growth through sport tourism and showing young girls across the country that a future career in professional women\u2019s soccer is possible, right here at home.\u201d<\/p>\n
Founded in April 2025 by former Team Canada soccer player Diana Matheson, the Northern Super League includes six clubs across Canada, including teams in Toronto and Ottawa. The championship caps a four-day festival celebrating women\u2019s sports through community events, concerts, and conferences.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe NSL Final is a milestone moment for professional soccer in Canada and we are grateful for the Ontario government\u2019s support,\u201d said Matheson. \u201cThis investment recognizes the positive impact the NSL Final will have on Toronto and across the province; attracting fans, supporting local businesses, and highlighting Ontario\u2019s leadership in advancing women in sport.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ontario invests over $30 million annually in sport and recreation, including grassroots programs that encourage youth participation, gender equity, and leadership in athletics. Since 2018, its Sport Hosting Program has funded more than 230 amateur events, supporting women\u2019s competitions at every level.<\/p>\n
