The bike\u2019s frame was bent around a light pole, its plaque cracked and nearly illegible.<\/p>\n \u201cThis continues to be an incredibly dangerous stretch of road that threatens the lives of my elderly neighbours walking, my kid learning to ride a bike, and everyone who uses it,\u201d said Andrew Kohan, a local resident and cyclist. \u201cMayor Gillingham and Councillor Janice Lukes have unreasonably delayed safety improvements that were promised nearly a year ago.\u201d<\/p>\n The Winnipeg Sun’s Daily Headline News<\/p>\n Thanks for signing up!<\/p>\n Article content<\/p>\n Advertisement 3<\/p>\n This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.<\/p>\n Article content<\/p>\n The collision comes one day after the City of Winnipeg launched a long-delayed public consultation on proposed interim bike lanes and traffic-calming measures for Wellington Crescent.<\/p>\n City documents show temporary bike lanes between Academy Road and Stradbrook Avenue are now scheduled for construction in spring 2026 \u2014 nearly a year later than initially planned. The lanes are meant to provide a short-term safety solution while the city studies options for permanent cycling infrastructure.<\/p>\n Jenner\u2019s widow, Wendy van Loon, said the timing of the crash was difficult to ignore.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s bizarre that this happened right as the consultation was finally starting,\u201d van Loon said. \u201cI\u2019m not religious, but it almost feels like Rob is sending a message \u2014 that council needs to get its act together and put in some bike lanes.\u201d<\/p>\n Advertisement 4<\/p>\n This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.<\/p>\n Article content<\/p>\n Advocates have pushed for changes along Wellington Crescent for more than two decades, arguing the corridor is unsafe for pedestrians and cyclists due to high speeds and a lack of dedicated bike infrastructure.<\/p>\n Hundreds of residents have previously appeared before council committees calling for reduced speed limits and temporary bike lanes.<\/p>\n \u201cThe delayed infrastructure pilot and consultation show that city leadership still doesn\u2019t value the lives of anyone outside a car,\u201d Kohan said.<\/p>\n Ghost bikes are white-painted bicycles installed at locations where cyclists have been killed in collisions with vehicles.
