{"id":28115,"date":"2025-07-28T00:29:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T00:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/28115\/"},"modified":"2025-07-28T00:29:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T00:29:14","slug":"takes-only-a-few-seconds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/28115\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Takes only a few seconds&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers have created a new tsunami detection system that could save a lot of lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Scientists at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/news\/view\/2907831-new-technology-uses-underwater-sound-waves-for-faster-and-more-reliable-tsunami-warnings-in-real-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cardiff University<\/a> in Wales, United Kingdom, have developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/green-tech\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"71\" title=\"Green tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">technology<\/a> that utilizes underwater sound waves to provide real-time warnings of a tsunami.<\/p>\n<p>The new system, Global Real-time Early Assessment of Tsunamis (GREAT), detects sound waves using underwater microphones called hydrophones.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>GREAT can also capture the properties of tsunamis from non-seismic sources because they also generate acoustic gravity waves.<\/p>\n<p>This will be important when a tsunami, or something resembling a tsunami, is caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/outdoors\/fingerprint-of-climate-change-extreme-weather-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">extreme weather<\/a>, which is becoming <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/5-ways-climate-change-increases-the-threat-of-tsunamis-from-collapsing-ice-shelves-to-sea-level-rise-175247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more common<\/a> due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/outdoors\/critical-climate-threshold-survey-scientists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">overheating<\/a> of the planet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecooldown.com\/green-tech\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"71\" title=\"Green tech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">technology<\/a> runs in real-time, without relying on pre-set templates or assumptions, and has been tested successfully using real hydrophone data,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/news\/view\/2907831-new-technology-uses-underwater-sound-waves-for-faster-and-more-reliable-tsunami-warnings-in-real-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a> project lead Dr. Usama Kadri.<\/p>\n<p>             &#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n\t                         &#13;<br \/>\n                  &#13;<br \/>\n                    &#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<br \/>\n                      &#13;<br \/>\n                      &#13;<br \/>\n                       <a href=\"https:\/\/links.thecooldown.com\/energysage-tcd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/EnergySage-Solar.jpg\" width=\"560\" height=\"400\" style=\"display:block;width:100%;height:auto;\"\/><\/a>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Want to go solar but not sure who to trust? They&#8217;re slow to warn and leave little time to respond, especially if an area is close to the source.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The deadly 2004 tsunami in Thailand, in which the waves arrived just 14 minutes after an earthquake and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Indian-Ocean-tsunami-of-2004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">killed nearly 230,000 people<\/a>, is an example of this.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional forms of detection can also create <a href=\"https:\/\/oceandecade.org\/actions\/global-real-time-early-alarm-for-tsunami-great\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">false alarms<\/a>, which can lead to mistrust in the warning system and potentially unnecessary deaths. On top of that, they&#8217;re incapable of assessing the size of a tsunami or if one is generated from non-seismic sources.<\/p>\n<p>The GREAT project has been underway for years, <a href=\"https:\/\/oceandecade.org\/actions\/global-real-time-early-alarm-for-tsunami-great\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">beginning in 2013<\/a>, and it&#8217;s scheduled to be completed in 2030.<\/p>\n<p>TCD Picks \u00bb Upway Spotlight<\/p>\n<p class=\"description-text\" style=\"color:#0E0E0E\">\ud83d\udca1Upway makes it easy to find discounts of up to 60% on premium e-bike brands<\/p>\n<p>The biggest issue the GREAT system is facing is a lack of hydroacoustic stations. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/news\/view\/2907831-new-technology-uses-underwater-sound-waves-for-faster-and-more-reliable-tsunami-warnings-in-real-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">only 11 stations globally<\/a>, and only four of those provide real-time data.
