{"id":282128,"date":"2025-11-14T07:57:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T07:57:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/282128\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T07:57:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T07:57:12","slug":"40-year-old-sculpture-demolished-in-battery-park-city-resiliency-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/282128\/","title":{"rendered":"40-Year-Old Sculpture Demolished in Battery Park City Resiliency Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tA massive 40-year-old art sculpture is being demolished in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/battery-park-city\/\" id=\"auto-tag_battery-park-city\" data-tag=\"battery-park-city\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Battery Park City<\/a> to make way for the\u00a0controversial <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bpca.ny.gov\/nwbpcr\/\">North\/West Battery Park City Resiliency<\/a>\u00a0(NWBPCR) project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe sculpture, titled Upper Room, by artist Ned Smyth, is a 20-column court featuring an elongated table with inlaid chessboards. The colonnade recalls ancient architecture and offered a public reprieve for New Yorkers. Commissioned in 1986, it was Battery Park City\u2019s first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/public-art\/\" id=\"auto-tag_public-art\" data-tag=\"public-art\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">public art<\/a> piece.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tJust last year the Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) released a video contextualizing the artist and sculpture within the New York landscape.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tRelated Articles<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-artnews-2019\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/GettyImages-1408782789.jpg\" alt=\"The Vaillancourt Fountain at Embarcadero Plaza, San Francisco, California, 2020.\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"\" width=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOn Wednesday, crews began tearing down the sculpture as part of a larger resiliency plan to integrate a coastal flood barrier management system to better protect against natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy, which caused <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bpca.ny.gov\/community\/bpca-marks-hurricane-sandy-anniversary\/\">$310 million in damage in Battery Park City<\/a>. It will run along the Hudson River waterfront from First Place to Chambers Street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe project will also shut down the city\u2019s most expensive harbor North Cove Marina for five years, which, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/17\/us-news\/nyc-boaters-fear-impending-north-cove-marine-closure-will-sink-businesses\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/17\/us-news\/nyc-boaters-fear-impending-north-cove-marine-closure-will-sink-businesses\/\" target=\"_blank\">New York Post <\/a>reported, has been met with mixed reviews among local sailors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSmyth, whose sculpture was previously appraised by the BPCA at $1.5 million, along with nearby residents, also expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve lived in Battery Park City for 31 years, and in those 31 years, not one drop of water from the Hudson River has come within ten feet of the base of that unit, so the notion that that art piece has to be demolished for flood prevention is preposterous,\u201d John Dellaportas, the Vice President of The Battery Alliance, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/12\/us-news\/upper-room-sculpture-to-be-destroyed-for-battery-park-city-project\/?utm\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/11\/12\/us-news\/upper-room-sculpture-to-be-destroyed-for-battery-park-city-project\/?utm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe ground beneath Upper Room is expected to become a tidal gate. It is the only commissioned public artwork slated to be demolished to make way for the NWBPCR project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThough Smyth was reportedly alerted about the pending demolition by the BPCA two years ago and reportedly wondered why the sculpture couldn\u2019t be relocated, the BPCA had claimed that the sculpture showed signs of deterioration and would have been too difficult to move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cUnfortunately, Upper Room must be removed for flood mitigation work necessary to protect lives and property in Battery Park City and beyond. While we have communicated this to the community and Mr. Smyth for over a year, we understand that the piece has been an indelible part of Battery Park City\u2019s history, and, as its first public art piece, a foundational work in a collection that now includes 19 pieces by more than 20 artists throughout BPC,\u201d a spokesperson for BPCA said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn addition to Smyth\u2019s sculpture, hundreds of trees are set to be razed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThis kind of construction, foregoing the old for the new, is not unique to New York.
