{"id":282393,"date":"2025-11-14T10:57:27","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T10:57:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/282393\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T10:57:27","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T10:57:27","slug":"new-glenn-launch-nasas-escapade-mission-to-mars-is-the-first-big-test-for-blue-origins-rocket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/282393\/","title":{"rendered":"New Glenn launch: NASA\u2019s Escapade mission to Mars is the first big test for Blue Origin\u2019s rocket"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxmrgm9005p2ap86oorhtik@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Blue Origin, the rocket company founded by Amazon multibillionaire Jeff Bezos, launched its towering New Glenn rocket on a mission that marked its first major test.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8tx00023b6n5epfh0cf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Carrying a pair of satellites that are destined to take a long, winding trip to Mars, New Glenn took flight from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station just before 4 p.m. ET Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxv8o8x000z3b6njlnclih1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Blue Origin also landed the first stage of the rocket back on a seafaring platform for the first time, marking a monumental stride forward in the company\u2019s efforts to make the New Glenn rocket reusable, less expensive, and a better competitor for Elon Musk\u2019s SpaceX.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8tx00033b6nq05b6pk3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/11\/09\/science\/new-glenn-rocket-launch-mars-escapade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Origin had been slated<\/a> to launch the NASA mission, called Escapade, on Sunday, but cloud cover resulted in the decision to postpone liftoff. The company then had to work with the Federal Aviation Administration, which recently implemented a ban on most rocket launches during daylight hours amid the government shutdown, to find a new opportunity to take off.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8tx00043b6n8q0ak7km@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The launch of Escapade \u2014 short for Escape and Plasma Acceleration Dynamics Explorers \u2014 marked the first flight for New Glenn with a customer payload onboard. The rocket completed its inaugural flight in January carrying Blue Origin-made demonstration technology in its cargo bay.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8tx00053b6n2t49ta7j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During that January mission, the company failed to recover New Glenn\u2019s first-stage booster, which is the bottommost portion of the rocket that gives the vehicle its initial burst of power at liftoff.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxx445q00183b6nrx9oqg2a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Blue Origin attributed the failed attempt to engines that did not properly reignite. But the company did not appear to experience any such issues Thursday, as New Glenn\u2019s first stage made a clean touchdown on a seafaring barge named Jacklyn after Bezos\u2019 mother.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8tx00063b6n1jtfs3ew@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Much like Blue Origin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/14\/science\/nasa-launch-firefly-ispace-moon-landing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chief competitor, SpaceX<\/a> \u2014 which has long been a dominant force in the commercial launch business \u2014 New Glenn is designed to be partially reused in order to drive down costs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8tx00083b6n12g8l5rx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Failing to land the rocket booster does not necessarily affect how companies assess the overall success of a mission, as the primary goal of any rocket launch is to safely deliver its cargo to orbit. But Blue Origin had made clear before takeoff that the steps of recovering and reflying parts of its rockets are crucial to the company\u2019s business model.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8tx00093b6nlfkyf3jh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And Blue Origin said it has spent the past 10 months largely focused on tweaking the New Glenn vehicle in the hopes of guaranteeing a successful booster landing.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        A landmark Mars mission<\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/ksc-20240822-ph-kls01-0007-large.jpg\" alt=\"Workers inspect and process NASA\u2019s Escapade twin spacecraft at the Astrotech Space Operations Facility near the agency\u2019s Kennedy Space Center in Florida in August 2024.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1280\" width=\"1920\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8ty000a3b6nxmjom531@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For this mission, New Glenn had among the most exciting tasks a rocket can be assigned. It delivered the twin Escapade satellites on a path toward Lagrange Point 2, or L2 \u2014 a cosmic balance point about 1.5 million kilometers (930,000 miles) from Earth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8ty000b3b6naawhjonl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lagrange Points can be useful for various types of missions because they allow spacecraft to potentially stay in orbit for a very long time while using minimal fuel. The James Webb Space Telescope, for example, is in orbit around L2.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/still-22117361-7174672-333000001-still.jpg\" alt=\"This image, taken from Blue Origin's webcast, shows the payload adapter of the company's New Glenn rocket as the Escapade satellites were deployed.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1080\" width=\"1920\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8ty000c3b6nnak17abl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In this case, however, the Escapade satellites will use L2 as a sort of orbital backroad in which to linger as they wait for their destination \u2014 Mars \u2014 to travel closer to Earth along its orbital path. In late 2026, when the next Mars transfer window opens, the satellites will then depart L2, briefly swing back by Earth, and set off on their final trek to the red planet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8ty000d3b6nxi1iqd8i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Both spacecraft are slated to enter Martian orbit in September 2027.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8ty000e3b6nwjt4qjw5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Only then will Escapade begin its core science mission. Led by the University of California, Berkeley, a team of researchers will study the planet\u2019s atmosphere \u2014 working to evaluate why Mars began to lose its once-dense atmosphere billions of years ago and assess radiation conditions for future explorers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8ty000f3b6niktric3r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThroughout the Escapade mission, the two satellites will take simultaneous measurements from nearly the planet\u2019s entire upper atmosphere and magnetosphere, ranging from altitudes between approximately 100 and 6,200 miles (160 and 10,000 kilometers),\u201d according to a UC Berkeley news release about the mission. \u201cCoordinated, multipoint observations are necessary to \u2026 unravel the chain of cause and effect within the system.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8ty000g3b6n3smlxoci@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Escapade is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/soma.larc.nasa.gov\/simplex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA\u2019s SIMPLEx<\/a> \u2014 or Small, Innovative Missions for Planetary Exploration \u2014 program, which aims to spur researchers and companies to devise ways to use small, inexpensive spacecraft to carry out science investigations at far cheaper than typical price points.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmhxms8ty000h3b6nqr7maj9z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The mission\u2019s cost was estimated to be less than $100 million, compared with the roughly $300 million to $600 million price tags of other NASA satellites orbiting Mars.\n    <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/editor-note\/instances\/cmhxp7ne3000b3b6n2q5skbbs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"editor-note\" class=\"editor-note-elevate vossi-editor-note_elevate inline-placeholder \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    Sign up for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/newsletters\/wonder-theory?source=nl-acq_article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CNN\u2019s Wonder Theory science newsletter<\/a>.
